I do exactly what RachealB suggested: I just upgrade to what is available when I want to play, and then I don't upgrade for some time ( few weeks, a month or so )
I do keep 3.5, hell even 3.0 for testing

I do this as well. I only download and compile when the devs ask for testing or when shiny new features come out. I keep just about every revision I compile, just in case they're ever needed.
