Quote:Many people have higher end hardware yet still prefer to have terrible image quality for the sake of authenticity
Why using Dolphin then anyway? Buy the console and you'll have your "terrible image quality" ..
Quote:Distance from the display, properties of the objects being rendered,
resolution of the display, etc. In general aliasing is supposed to be
less noticeable on HDTVs despite the larger screen size because of how
far away you are from it.
For people whose room is not really suitable for sitting like 5 meters away (or more) edges are surely noticable .. I'm sitting about 2,5 to 3 meters away from a
Ø 117cm screen and ...
Quote: I'm pretty sensitive to it at almost any distance/size/resolution.
.. I'm also very sensitive about this ..
Quote:To be fair that has nothing to do with the game console and everything to do with the game developers.
For sure it's about the consoles, far too expensive for far too little performance .. Sure a PC is much more expensive but on a console you have almost no freedom in what you do .. You only can do what the developers offer ..
Quote:If they made the jump from 1280 x 720 to 4096 x 2160 now there would be
almost no improvement in quality in any other area of rendering. There
decision makes perfect sense.
Did I say anything about 4k would improve the image quality?
Advertising with 4k makes no sense because these TVs (now) are far to expensive and you have to realize how big 4k is and how much power they will need .. Maybe 4k is (now) something for projectors but I would never use a projector for watching movies, that's why I don't like to go in cinemas ..
RachelB Wrote:Huh? 1440p monitors are pretty cheap now. 4k might be a bit much to ask for, but limiting to 1080p is just dumb.
I was talking about HDTVs since I was responding to a quote about console gaming.
RachelB Wrote:Only if they need to make concessions to handle such a high resolution. They wouldn't for all games. About the only thing they need to do to allow rendering at such resolutions is to not explicitly disable it. They should let the developers decide on their own. If a game can run fine at 4k, let it render at 4k. If anything higher than 1080p lags too much, then i guess it'll have to be rendered at 1080p.
By "them" I meant "game developers". They will likely allow 4k rendering but developers won't bother with it since it would mean using lower quality shaders and/or assets and there are hardly any 4k HDTVs on the market right now.

There are many other advantages to using an emulator. Savestates and easy recording for example.

Well if it can output 4k you can advertise it as supporting 4k. It's as simple as that. Regardless of whether it's that useful or not to you personally it's still a feature.

I wouldn't call recording on Dolphin easy for a program that needs so much CPU power to work properly ..

Sure you can but what for? => nonsense !

I'm not sure what slowdowns has to do with convenience. And besides if you have a fast HDD, a decent GPU, and a quad core cpu this shouldn't be an issue. It is much easier to record from dolphin than off of a real wii. But that was just one example. There are plenty of other advantages that emulation offers if you think about it. Some people do it just to save space by having an all in one console that can emulate many different consoles (not to mention the games which take up a lot of space unless you put them all on a HDD as .iso files).
slax65 Wrote:Sure you can but what for?
To make your product look good of course. They will advertise every feature that they can come up with that isn't already standard.

The both of us might have all this but not everyone and ...
Quote:It is much easier to record from dolphin than off of a real wii.
... it's not true that recording from the Wii is harder .. You just buy a haupauge or a capture-card, plug in all cables and you're done .. I wouldn't call recording from Dolphin harder but it's far more complicated .. You have to note so many things .. I created a Dolphin folder for each game, because when I used to had one allone for all games, we restarted the games like 10 times because there was always a setting missed .. I also have to overclock my i7 930 and my GTX 580 to get 60fps while recording .. Luckily i found DxTory - fraps is a framerate-killer ..
(Now) overclocking is no problem for me .. We still have pretty low temperatures here in Germany .. T___T
I always put my computer out of my room into the corridor directly below an opened window and connect it with a 15 meters long HDMI cable to my screen ..
O'cking makes fun, when the temps never go higher then 30C° because of -1C° cold air^^
