Just to clarify:
Trolling is when someone tells lies with the intention of getting a laugh about people believing those lies.

This can e.g. be done by causing arguments through presumably taking a stance in a discussion that you do not actually believe in (like going to the PETA forums and saying that cows should be happy we eat them... someone WILL rage and that's when a Troll considers himself successful)
Of course there are many other ways to troll like saying your 20 year old computer runs Zelda TP seemlessly at 60FPS on hyrule field and getting a laugh out of people falling for it.

So in short: Trolling = Saying things you do not mean in order to provoke certain reactions out of other people in a negative way.

There's no requirement for you to not believe what you say. More accurately, trolling is doing anything with the goal of getting a certain reaction. Often this is done by saying things you don't believe, but not necessarily. To go along with your example, someone could go to a PETA forum, and say that it's no big deal to eat cows; something many people believe, and that would still be trolling, because they're just doing to to get a reaction out of people.
