DVD drives for Wii and Gamecube Backups/Burn

GameCube and Wii games may be ripped using a DVD-ROM and either Rawdump 2.0, or FriiDump. Only DVD-ROM drives have been reported to work for ripping. Any DVD Writer can be used to burn. The DVD-ROM drives that rip are all manufactured by LG Electronics or H-L Data Storage, but are sold under various brand names (see the list below). The specific ripper drive models that I have confirmed myself are GDR-8082N, 8161B, 8162B, 8163B, 8164B.

Other drives reported to work (Before you buy, make sure it’s the correct firmware);

1. Laptop slim drive GDR-8082N works. I personally confirmed firmware 0007 works in PIO mode only, Drive REV. A0. Adapters to use these in desktops are about $5 shipped on eBay. Search for JAE adapter. If your 8082N does not work, you can try flashing it with IBM’s 0L03 firmware here. If it will not flash, see this thread for help forcing a flash.

2. SATA LG GDR-H10N by user culius. It’s important to note that according to IrishTR *only firmware version 0B10 works. You can download 0B10 here, but nobody has found a flash utility that will work yet. H10N firmwares that DO NOT work: 0D04, D70D

* See the red highlighted text below.

3. GDR-8160B by Wiible here, however other 8160s have not worked, so there are likely different firmware versions or Wiible is wrong. Firmwares reported not working: 0009, 0012, 0018. 8161B firmware is here.

eBay search for all drives: Wii/GameCube DVD-ROM Backup Drives

(Also click this link: Buy It Now items)

Google product search for all drives: Wii/GameCube DVD-ROM Backup Drives.

Note: Brand names of 816* drives that have been confirmed – LG Electronics, Hewlett Packard (HP), Hitachi, H-L Data Storage, Compaq, Sony, IBM, Teac, Gateway, Goldstar

The above brands are all made or licensed by LG Electronics and they just have the different brand stickers on them. Many even have the LG logo right on the front like this, but it’s not necessary:

Caution: watch out for the similarly modeled, CRD-816* CD drives. You want a DVD-ROM not a CD-ROM

Confirmed working/non-working – Brand, Model, Firmware version, Rip speed, Mode, User.

ok this is my first post i registered mainly to ask about this, i have searched the forums and googled for a few days to see if any of the 6 cd drives in my apartment will do the dumping but none of them are directly listed. i wanted to give it a shot anyway and when i tried to use my alienware laptop drive (Optiarc AD-7640S) that running friidump 0.4.0 on SSBB it sees i have a wii_dl disk, and it sees there is an update on the disk (or i think thats what it means with update avalible) but it wont see the name or anything else. it did dump the ISO, but it was 7.92 GB (much larger then i have seen and read it should be). i did try rawdump as shown in this thread but all it does is say it detected the disk and then throws an error saying i must have a faulty drive.

so my main question is; is this normal for some drives to be able to close to being able to dump the disc like this even if they are not the LG drives? or is it possible i have a drive that can read the disks and i just need to adjust some settings or drivers/firmware?

thanks for any help

Hi, just letting you know that I tested it on my TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633M. Doesn't seem to work.
TSSTcorp drives are really bad for this, aren't they? Dodgy
*re-reads "Dont work on" (sic) list*

By the way, has anyone gotten a successful dump on a Bluray drive? I'm thinking about yanking out my DVD-Multi drive and replacing it with a BR-Multi (or whatever the proper name is).
So irritating. I ordered the LG GDR-8162B DVD Drive IDE GDR-8164B, off of Ebay for like $19.99. Hopefully it works. I'm lucky my motherboard has an IDE/PATA port, cause there is literally only one and everything else is SATA.

The link in the first post doesn't seem to be working for me. Found the file here though:

i have two easier methods then this ....

First being if your gunna illegally copy the games, easiest way is with torrents . Download the isos, then load them in dolphin .... then compress them, and delete the iso to save space .. " My Method" ..

Google :

"Name of Game ntsc/pal wii iso torrent" and download via utorrent.

Option 2 :

If you have a wii or know some one who does, Usb Loader gx can copy compressed isos to a hard disk .

The option mentioned is good as well ...

And finally Pirating software ect ..... is how these companies stay in business ... they started doing something about it and lost alot of money in the process and realized it was better for them to let us continue to pirate games and software ect.... Dolphin is awesome good day
Doesn't work on ATAPI DVD A DH20A4P 9P59

I personally have the LG GDR-8164B (don't know firmware rev off the top of my head tho) in a Macally external USB/Firewire enclosure and it works like a champ. Dumped all my games with it, zero errors. Check your dumps against http://www.redump.org they have md5/sha1 hashes for an assload of games.
