Anyone know if this DVD drive will work?

ASUS DRW-24B1ST i SCSI CdRom Device
If it's not on the list, I'd imagine nobody knows. But nobody really uses this method anymore because it's unreliable, and used Wiis are super cheap anyway.

I do not know anything about this type of drive, what makes me think it won't work, is that you said it's a CD-ROM drive, not a DVD Drive, never mind a dual layer DVD. If you've ever used a DVD on this particular drive, there is a tiny chance it can read dual-layer, and might be able to read/rip Wii and GCN games.

A quick Google search tells me it's a DVD drive.

The chance of a DVD player being able to read dual-layer discs isn't tiny, it's pretty big. But the chance that it'll be able to rip GC/Wii games is indeed tiny.

So is it better to just use a Wii to rip games vs PC? I have a Wii but its not modded.
It's incredibly easy and completely safe to mod a Wii to the point that you can dump games to a hard drive. There are plenty of guides around as well; Google "dumping Wii games with Cleanrip" or something similar.
are there any portable dvd players that can read gc/wii disk

You mean that plugin via USB or something? I think there is, but I'd say just getting a wii is a much better idea.
