but
I got mine working with imgburn, burn the cd to iso, then mount the iso with clonedrive.
Then dolphin play it flawlessly without lag

Sounds quite weird... because
imgburn is a recording tool but
to rip an image one needs a reading tool.

Now some facts:
There are only 3 working reading softwares for the pc:
- rawdump, freedump and hektograph
- freedump is a commandline tool and the slowest of the three but it supports dual layer games.
- rawdump is a lot quicker than freedump but it contains comercial ads and is somewhat unreliable and it does not support dual layer games.
- hektograph is shareware and the fastest and it supports dual layer games.
All of the three tools rely on a special DVD drive.
To be more precise: the drive needs to support a special command set.
This special commend set is only supported by some
Hitachi Light-On DVD drives whose name begins like this:
"HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8"

One does not need to try with newer Hitachi Light-On DVD
drives or recorders for that matter because newer drives
and especially recorders do not support the necessary special
command set.

I hope that clears up some misunderstandings

so... im new to all this
Im trying to rip a game disc onto the computer to play on dolphin and have had no luck so far. my drive isnt compatible with rawdump so im hoping someone can either show me another way to get my game disc onto my computer or link me to a cheap external drive that will work with rawdump
Just look up the drives listed in this thread and buy one. It might not be the cheapest solution in the end of it all though.

You can get a Wii for $140 at GameStop here in the US. IMO it is much easier to use a Wii to dump your games. It also gives you more features that aren't available normally (such as the advantages of a proper NAND dump, virtual console titles, and the ability to fall back on the Wii if Dolphin is too slow). The Wii Remotes with Motion Plus can also be nice for playing games with the intended controller.

If $140 is too expensive for you, though, just look up the models listed on Newegg or something.

ok so I copy and pasted some of the model numbers into newegg and found a drive but before I buy it could you please reassure me that it will work? its here
Assuming you have a Desktop with Windows you can install the drive on, I think that should work. I don't entirely know though, as I haven't used it. Someone else will need to reassure you.

The drive you set a link to is a Sony recorder.
That drive will NOT work.
You need a drive of that kind "HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8" which is a reader but not a recorder.

how do you tell whether its a reader or recorder?

1st of all one needs a "Hitachi/Liteon" drive. You pointed out a Sony device.
2nd of all a recorder is a device capable of recording optical discs.
All "Hitachi/Liteon" drives whose name begins with "DVD-ROM GDR8" are readers. ROM is an acronym for "Read Only Memory"
"Hitachi/Liteon" recorders do NOT support the necessary command set.
So stop trying to trick yourself into buying a cheap replacement in spite of the few original drives that are the only ones capable of doing the job...
You will regret it if you buy the drive you mentioned.
Wouldn't it be possible to modify the firmware of your DVD-Drive to make it read GC/Wii discs?
Maybe not if it is a whole different manufacturer I guess but for instance, it works on the Optiarc DVD RW AD-7203A, and I have an Optiarc from the same (72XX) series; the AD-7200S.
I can change the booktype/bitsetting on my DVD Drive but as you probably know, that only affects writing not reading.

Current firmware of my drive is 1.0B (latest as far as I know).

Modifying a firmware is a herkulian task... forget about it.
Nobody will do the job...

To modify a firmware one needs to understand the chipset
of the drives PCB. A manufacturer typically uses different
firmwares on different drives.

(09-25-2012, 09:17 PM)Omar007 Wrote: [ -> ]but for instance, it works on the Optiarc DVD RW AD-7203A,
No it does not work. It only works on *certain* Hitachi/Liteon drives
because these are the only ones that support the special commands
necessary to do the job. Above of all the process even relies on
some other assumptions that could make it might
even not work on each and every drive that supports the necessary
commands because of a change in these assumptions. So one might
even need a special FW Version...

Forget about it. Sony drives do not support the necessary commands.
As I wrote above now several times the whole dump process
relies on a feature that only very few drives of a certain
manufacturer supported in the past (certain commands).
The manuafacturere was "Hitachi/Liteon". Even this manufacturer
dropped these commands in later drives firmwares.

Well I know what you are in for... You *want* it to work!
But you have to accept that it will not work on other drives...
