Nintendo will also unveil a new 3D Mario this e3. So keep your hopes up.

Say goodbye to Zelda, Metroid, Xenoblade Wii U, Smash Bros, Resident Evil (if it goes console only), Final Fantasy, Tales of ─, etc, etc.
There's just too many good console titles to solely stick to the PC sadly.
Edit: The PS4 will be revealed at Feb 20. Some other details have been revealed (unofficial) such as the controller etc.

Quote:Sony is set to reveal its next PlayStation on Wednesday February 20th at an event dubbed ‘see the future’.
Quote:PlayStation 4 will be more powerful than the next Xbox, will ship with a redesigned controller and launch by the end of the year in Japan and the US. PlayStation 4’s European launch will follow in early 2014.
Quote:Sources close to the hardware have revealed to us that the PS4 will ship with a redesigned controller which is the same size as an existing DualShock but features a small touchpad in place of the existing Select, Start and PS buttons. The tech is based on Vita’s rear touchpad, and is similarly responsive in use.Why must they imitate Nintendo once again? Hopefully there'll be an alternative controller without the touch stuff.
Quote:A new Share button on the controller will, when pressed, launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online. The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet. Now this sounds pretty cool actually.

I've already missed out on some of the PS3 games (Uncharted) I would have liked to have played because of the "exclusive" crap they pull, but there's nothing I can really do about it. It's not like I'm going to buy all three next-gen consoles to play a few games on each. I'm not going to let them decide which hardware I buy, I'm going to buy the games that come to my hardware. If game developers want to limit their game market to one platform, that's their problem. I won't be hopping from console to console playing those games.

There are also talks of a new Smash Bros. on the way, so its a win-win.

Visualizing this, i cant see how we're suppose to use it, it sounds as though you'll be stretching your thumbs to the limit, if it was underneath like the VITA it would have made alot more sense. I hope they dont make something as stupid as a wii u gamepad.

2 slightly different Jaguar APUs do not interest me. As bad as the Cell turned out to be it was least interesting to talk about.

Gaming console = Play games
PC = Play games plus 1000 other things.
No contest.

I'm mostly inclined to agree with you. However once a console is outdated you can snag it on ebay for dirt cheap. At that point it becomes worth it in my opinion to play the good exclusive games that were released on it, even if there are only a few.

But limiting your game to one target platform generally improves the quality of the game. I can't stand all of the crappy crossplatform games/ports that this generation brought.

Interesting, but shitty. Console developers should generally try to avoid "interesting" architectures that require different programming paradigms to be efficient for obvious reasons. I still don't know wtf sony was thinking when they decided to fund the development of cell be.
If these specs turn out to be true the PS4 will have 50% more shader throughput and 170% more memory bandwidth while the xbox720 will have twice the memory and 32MB of edram. Once again we will be stuck with playstation's memory limitations and the xbox's throughput/processing limitations, just like this generation.

Either that or in 10-15 years later if emulation has progressed. I'd still prefer to not have a stack of old consoles sitting in the corner if I can help it.

We've had this discussion before. I think game developers can make equally good games for more than one console if they wanted to. Starting the game on the PC and then start degrading it to fit in with limited console hardware sounds like a good idea to me.

It won't work unless they essentially make a different game for each console. You have to make tradeoffs in terms of controls, user interface, level design, graphics, audio, well basically everything in order to allow the game to run on multiple platforms. For example if you design your levels around PC memory limitations how the hell are you going to get it to run on a console with a fraction of the memory? Cut it into smaller sublevels? That may only work properly if they are designed in a linear way. Use lower poly meshes and lower resolution textures? That will only get you so far and will produce poor visual quality. Use streaming? Once again that only works with a linear design. Big open areas will have serious pop-in problems. Like I said you have to make some kind of trade off if you're doing multiple platforms that it going to reduce the potential quality of at least one of the versions.
