Hey guys so I've been messing with Dolphin and have a few quick questions to ask you all:

1) When it comes to fps, if you run faster than the games original fps it always will play at a faster speed then normal (i.e. native 60fps rendering at 95fps means it'll be running 35% faster than normal, not 35% smoother?)

2) Is native refresh rate for most games 30hz? 60hz?

Basically I thought that if my system can run the game at 115fps for instance it would just be much smoother, without speeding up actual gameplay, is that not the right assumption to make?

I've got a 3570k oced to 4.6ghz and a GTX 690 (not as important I know).
NTSC : either 30FPS or 60FPS max
PAL : either 25FPZ or 50FPS max
Basically , higher FPS = smoother gameplay (NTSC > PAL) . However if you exceed the framelimit , that will be too fast to play
Depending on the games , Yugioh 5D's Master of the Card should be played at 80-120 FPS . Most games should leave framelimit to auto

I see...that's a shame. Is this just an inherent issue with emulation? Or is this something that could hypothetically be solved?

Setting Framelimit to "Audio" will solve this

Thing is when I set to audio it defaults to 30fps in my test titles only.

Please stop posting this. With the PAL60 option on, 95% of PAL games run at 30/60 FPS. The only game I know of that's locked to 25/50 is xenoblade, and that even has an .iso patch you can apply to adjust this.

It's not an issue, that's just how the games are programmed.
No , i will keep posting this because you don't prove that i'm wrong
I don't enable PAL60 , that's it
More FPS (limit) make the game run slower . 25/50 FPS limit is better than 30/60 FPS
So some of you might say sth like : "I have a powerful PC XXX YYY , speed don't matter" whatever . I do care about speed atm until i can affort a monster laptop

If you're interested in the actual programming behind it (it's really very simple) have a look at frame dependent motion vs frame independent motion. Most console games use the first method, probably because the exact hardware for a given platform is a known quantity; only an extremely limited number of console games use frame independent motion compared to those that don't. Most modern PC games use the second one, though indie devs or hobbyists/first timers may rely on frame dependent motion since it's straightforward to implement.

95% of the Wii games, at any rate. Last time I checked, Dolphin doesn't emulate PAL60 for GC games. Also admin89, keep in mind that there are some oddballs like LoZ:WW. I believe the PAL version can run 30/50 FPS depending on what's going on. I should play mine to have a thorough look-see sometime Big Grin
I've done some limited testing, and it doesn't seem to affect the emulation speed when you enable PAL60, as I think many calculations are done per period of time, not per frame (although, of course, it isn't real time, just time relative to the target refresh rate).
