I mistyped a number, it was 3.0ghz

* 3.0 GHz - > 1.3 v;
* 3.2 GHz - > 1.42 v;
* 3.6 GHz - > 1.55 v;
* 3.7 GHz - > 1.67 v.

Well, up to 3.0ghz should be completely safe to overclock these budget cpu's.
Makes me wonder, what are the limits of a E8500? Or a E8600?

That's a problem with cpu-z, the real voltage is up there: 1.67 (this surely kills the cpu in 6-8 months)
Cpu-z already had problems reading high voltages on Phenom II cpu's, so i wouldn't be surprised.
never trust cpu-z's reading of voltage. It's completely wrong. Rely on multimeter only. Also, e8XXX class cpus and other 45nanometer cpus are very sensitive to voltage, unlike their 65 nm counterparts. For all those that are scared of overclocking, you can leave, while we enjoy the benefits. Unless you're a total idiot, it's pretty hard to kill a computer by overclocking.

I don't really check voltage readings much. I just take it for granted that the voltage will be around the same I set it as. Vdroop isn't something I worry about because I have LLC on Auto (which means Enabled for practicality's sake). And I HAVE already read Anand's article on LLC so don't try and get me to disable it. Hey, I read somewhere about some Core 2 E8700 running at 3.5Ghz stock, is it out already? I have found no site offering such cpu.
I wonder how overpriced it will be.

Considering how ridiculously overpriced the E8600 was, I'm betting this'll be no lower than 300 CAD at retail. Not sure about USD though.

That's right, but if you have good cooling, it is quite save. And when really only increasing the clock in small steps and then testing, you will see Windows making problems before the Processor will give up without any warning.

So, is my CPU cooler (Cooler Master V8) and my temperatures OK enough to try overclocking? There doesn't seem to be an option to change the voltage in my BIOS... Should I take a picture of my BIOS options to help you tell me what to do?

I've now edited the full overclocking guide to the first post. I hope you understand it, its hard to explain because of all this different motherboard-types.

Lol, I hope you guys don't think the only differences between the E2180 and the E8400 is their speed?
Afaik there are many other differences, a different architecture, and so on... I don't think a E2180 @3 Ghz will have the same speed than a E8400.

It should be okay. I just read your temperatures again and they are quite good. I don't know your cooler, so I can't say. But just try it out, if the Core-Temperature increases too much after overclocking a bit, get a new one. If you just try out 200-400 Mhz +, you are on the safe side with every cooler except the boxed one Wink

Thanks, 'The King'! I really appreciate that! I'm going to get right onto that as soon as I can print that off. My printers been funny today.

Great! Thanks very much for reassuring me. I guess the blue arrow pointing down means it's doing a good job. My CPU never came with a cooler, so we bought one. I hope that means it's good! I'm looking forward to putting it up and seeing how it goes. I will be posting again.
