Y'know, I think I've actually managed to avoid this issue just with my habit of holding Tab (which temporarily disables the speed limiter) while things load. Trying it now, I actually find that even if it grayscreens/blackscreens, tapping Tab fixes it and lets it load.

(I should note that I'm currently using HLE with OpenAL, the latter of which uses accurate audio timing. If the above doesn't work, try OpenAL, eh?)
OpenAL is a backend, it shouldn't matter. Also what do you mean it uses "accurate audio timings"?

Backends do matter in some cases, don't they? For example, under the old AX HLE there was a game or two that crashed under every backend except NullAudio, since it was the only one that emulated the DSP at the same speed as the CPU under HLE (meaning that audio plays at full speed *only* if the game's running at full speed [or, rather, it would if NullAudio output any audio]). OpenAL does this too now, as of skidau's recent work. I don't know if this affects this issue at all, but whatever.

That blog entry......this is amazing.

Dolphin's save states are buggy and problematic, and could be causing your issue. Don't use 'em, use memory card saves.

Guys, I'm having a similar problem.
Whenever I reach that part of the game it freezes, always.

I've even tried other versions of the game, but always happens the same problem in the same place.
Whenever I get that necklace or the girl hands me an item, the game freezes.

Can anyone help me?
Try setting framelimit to audio or using LLE recompiler.
If you want to use LLE, pls note, that you will get lower speed. To avoid this, check "LLE on thread". The performance will be a bit better.
