Full Version: Looking around at some Laptop CPUs

So I have been looking at some laptop CPUs and I have found some pretty decent ones in the i series. I found an Intel Core i7 2720QM on newegg.com that can clock up to 3.2 GHz with two out of four cores active. My current one gets REALLY good FPS in most games at 2.9GHz, so I am talking about upgrading with one of our family friends who builds computers. He's changed out CPUs in laptops and desktops before whether it be de-soldering and re-soldering, or simply messing with an upgradable CPU. Has anyone else had any experience with changing out laptop CPUs that could tell me what else I need to consider buying (cooling fan replacements, ram brands, etc.)? I was thinking it would be wise to buy some Arctic Silver thermal paste, but this CPU is a sandy bridge and sandy bridge CPUs tend to generate less heat than Ivy Bridge CPUs typically (or so I've been told).

That's true for the desktop parts, idk about the laptop ones
I'm pretty sure it's the same for Sandy Bridge Mobile processors.

400$ for an i7 2720QM is too expensive
Arctic Silver 5 can conduct electricity , you should buy Arctic MX-4 instead (and it's much better as well)
Your laptop is not a gaming laptop . Beware overheating ...

Thanks for the suggestions. I sent a link to newegg because that was the first place I found one. I never said I would buy one from there. Tongue I took a look at the links you sent me. I found some good prices. Big Grin I'm glad you told me about the Arctic MX-4.

I know my laptop has the possibility of overheating, but I may also get some work done on the cooling system. It all depends on what I can afford at the time.

EDIT: Also, I'd like to apologize for bothering you on youtube so much. I feel bad for it. Sad

No it does not generate less heat. It generates more heat. Generating less heat is not the same thing as running at a colder temperatures. Ivy bridge desktop cpus generate less heat but don't dissipate it as effectively, thus they end up reaching higher temperatures.

The mobile chips do not have this problem because they do not use the cheap TIM or heatspreader.

I have one more question. How do I know if my laptop supports the QM processor? Is there certain data I can look at about the Mobo and CPU bus to determine that?
