This game seems unplayable using 3.5 'stable release' version of Dolphin for OS X due to major slow-down. The game runs at 100% speed in Bootcamp running Windows 7, but only about 15% speed in OS X 10.8. Reducing all the graphics options seems to make no difference at all; it seems an emulation problem rather than hardware.

UPDATE 19Dec14: Game now runs at full speed in Dolphin 4.0.2 for OS X. Big Grin However, there are no exhaust flame effects when running in OS X compared to Windows 7.
This game...is like a big part of my childhood...and...I am just glad to reunite with it again. One of the very first racing games before I became interested in racing entirely. Big Grin
How can that be? I thought the dolphin opengl backend is the same across all platforms.
It is; it's just that Mac usually has shittier drivers than Windows. Or it could be a settings issue. Who knows? Without a fifo + someone on multiple OSes, we won't know for sure.

Might be the Mac drivers. OSX 10.9 was apparently supposed to improve the drivers but, according to Mac forums, this hasn't happened (I'm still running on 10.8).

Most PC games ported to Mac seem to have graphical glitches. e.g. A lot of the shadows are not rendered in the Mac port of Call of Duty Modern Warfare but the game renders perfectly when run on the same machine but in Bootcamp. Again this probably a OpenGL Mac driver problem.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the soundtrack does not play on the newer releases of Dolphin. The oldest version I had prior to the latest stable release was 3.0-555 (Dirty) and the music played on that version. This is regardless of the audio settings. I tried them all. Just an FYI as I didn't see it noted anywhere.

When I try to load the Palm Bay Heights level, the game freezes up at the loading screen.
Does the same thing happen on 4.0 or another stable version?

Yes, no matter what version I'm on, I tried 3.0, 3.5, and later versions, I'm getting a same freeze up at the loading screen while loading the Palm Bay Heights stage. It occurred when I select the car first, and selected the Palm Bay Heights level, transitioned to the loading screen and freezes. I had to stop the emulation and restart the game, then I selected the two other levels, Airport Terminal 3 and Interstate 88, the game runs fine and doesn't freeze up at the loading screen. Then I load the Palm Bay Heights stage again, I get a freeze up at the loading screen. I changed the settings on the Dolphin Emulator but no effect. Then I looked on the log file and it looks like this:
