Hi Maxo,

Shonumi is correct that is it a known issue. While I agree that restarting your game is a poor workaround, it is one that works nonetheless. I still get the crackling with any backend using LLE. It has been weeks since I got any feedback from skid so I am unsure what exactly has been done regarding progress on this issue.
Seems like i found another issue, not sure if this happens to the game sometimes or probably a bad dump but, the game sometimes freezes when a super move/magic has been used, the damage numbers stay frozen on top of the health bars and wont do anything else at all, the music, animations, etc. still work but the battle just wont progress at all
I only had that happen to me once while getting the Purple Moon Stone during that boss battle. Switching to an older revision seemed to take care of the issue. You could try going back to 3.5-78 (the 1st merge of the new-ax-hle branch) so you can still get proper sound. The latest revisions may have taken care of the issue as well. Might as well try both.

Im using revision 3.5-1344 right now, and happened to me once yesterday and right now twice for some reason, ill just upload some screenies of my configuration settings in a minute

EDIT:

If it still happens on the latest, I guess older revisions are the way to go. Ideally, an issue should be made about this. I think it may be related to audio processing. Some games need to acknowledge that a sound effect or some music has finished in order to run the rest of the game (e.g. It sometimes tells the game a cutscene is over). I distinctly remember not hearing a sound effect play before my freeze after I used Cutlass Fury, so that may be the key.

Here's an idea: uncheck DSP on Dedicated Thread. delroth used to have this as the default behavior, so for a time Dolphin used to have 3 major threads always (for CPU, GPU, and the DSP), but it was known to cause issues on HLE audio. This freeze might be an example of that. In fact, I think I only got past that freeze when I used 3.5 (before the 1st new-ax-hle merge, but it has some preliminary improvements to SoA that made audio very acceptable).

Ettornio

Hello! I'm a long time user of Dolphin and a lurker of these boards, but I thought I'd add my experience with this game using my setup (see signature for current setup). I realize that my current hardware is absolute overkill for Dolphin, but it's not all I built it for Tongue. It's actually surreal how well it runs with powerful hardware combined with latest SVN. I am using Dolphin 3.5-1387 x64 which I downloaded from the main downloads page. It's not a custom build or anything.

Currently I am using the projection hack as well as dual core being enabled, along with these settings:

Video

Basic settings
  • DX9 video backend
  • Fullscreen resolution: 2560x1440
  • Aspect ratio: Force 16:9
  • Show FPS: Yes
Enhancements
  • Internal Resolution: 2x Native (1280x1056)
  • Anti-Aliasing: 9x SSAA
  • Anisotropic Filtering: 16x AF
  • Scaled EFB Copy: Yes
  • Widescreen Hack: Yes
Hacks
  • Skip EFB Access from CPU: No
  • Ignore Format Changes: Yes
  • EFB Copies -> RAM
  • External Frame Buffer: Disable
Advanced
  • Enable Progressive scan: Yes (Does this game even use it?)
The shadow corruption is still present, but it's not a huge bother.

Audio/DSP
  • DSP HLE Emulation
  • DSP on dedicated thread: Yes
  • XAudio2 backend (works best so far for me)
I've tried DSP LLE (using dumped DSP from console) but I still get skippy audio; higher clock speed necessary?

Performance Evaluation

It's worth adding that I'm still at the beginning on the Valuan Battle Ship. The intro with Alfronso had zero slowdowns/issues, and right now I'm just running around getting into battles to see how it performs, but so far it has been flawless. I have not had any frame drops or anything. I'm truly blown away. I'll try getting further today to how it performs. Plus, the text isn't all floaty or uh... 'low sanity'-like. I don't get any stuttering when using Cutlass Fury; the transition is seemless and fluid.

Like others, the D3D11 backend is unusable for me.

Not sure if I'll get the Purple Moon Stone issue but I'll certainly let you guys know if I do.

Anyways it's been running excellent. If people want, I can try to make a video of it running at these high settings.

*Note: I am using the NTSC/U version.

Here's a sample of the image quality (image too large to show on post in my opinion): http://imageshack.us/a/img443/8720/dolphin2013052912581459.png

Huge props to the devs. Dolphin has come a long way since I last played this game on Dolphin over 1.5 years back.
Im using similar specs/resolution/settings as the user above and the latest dolphin. The game runs fine.
The only framerate drops i get are in some "cutscenes". For example after the first boss there is a flashback scene for a couple of secs...during that the framrate drops to 5-10 fps and the sound becomes distorted. But its nothing that bothers me that much.... The sound is fine it cracks very slighlty sometimes, nothing major
(but this happens to almost all my dolhpin games havent really figured out this one yet).

EDIT: I also have the red/green shades under the characters.....which i presume is normal?
The red/green shadows are "normal" because they're a known issue (one of the last ones affecting this game really). Everything else is fixable, but the red/green shadows don't happen on a real console.

Some cutscenes will drop, Fina's flashback seems to cause the most drops for some people. When I played SoA, I didn't get any drops on her flashback (was running my 2500K at stock and was using LLE audio at the time), but other scenes dropped to about 25 FPS for some reason later on in the game (even under HLE audio). It might make a difference if you use OpenGL instead of DX9 at least for Fina's flashback.
I wish there was some way to get rid of the corrupted shadows. Maybe some cheat that disables all shadows altogether. Unfortunately my knowledge when it comes to game hacking stops at memory editing, or I'd love to look into it.
Hello, I am kind of having a problem. Most of the models in the game are black-textured. I've tried for days to fix this problem... Everything else, however, is fine. The game runs perfectly and the sound is crackly at times but it's still good.
