dynamic contrast isn't an issue at all. i mentioned the laptop to say what i wanted from my monitor. very good image quality

i mentioned dynamic contrast as it aided the solution but very little.

dynamic contrast is what ati/amd calls it i dunno what nvidia calls it. that is what i'm talking about but wasn't supposed to be taken into heavy consideration

Yup AMD calls it dynamic range too. Dynamic contrast is a completely different technology (as I explained). I'm surprised that you like the look of dynamic contrast, I can't stand it (and from what I've been reading neither can most so called "videophiles").

Dynamic range is a setting for nvidia purevideo, AMD UVD (UVD replaced AVIVO 4 years ago), and intel clear video.

my driver [ati 4850] calls it dynamic contrast not range. i mean i'm not going to argue over this point, but that's just what it says on mine.

the thing with this tech is that i believe, they tried to preserve everything. being careful not to lose what the film director intended. i think nvidia and ati have both achieved that. i don't know about intel. the little boost in brightness works great in animations. i haven't seen an issue with films either, so i don't see how you can hate it. but you can dislike it. i personally use it on all web videos and vlc. so that's everything

edit, wikipedia says uvd is part of avivo hd.... i dunno

Can you give me a screenshot of this setting so that I can be sure that we're talking about the same thing?

Neither dynamic contrast nor high dynamic range helps preserve the original source materiel's appearance. In fact both pretty much do the exact opposite.

NaturalViolence means this, you're looking in the Quality-Tab

it's the image posted by anti ultimate but slightly different.

but i don't have flesh tones or whites etc

my settings are limited in respect to anti ultimate and it says dynamic contrast.

drivers haven't been updated for half a year by ati.

if you notice, it's all one page and has both contrast and range.

mine is actually a blend of anti ultimate and images above.

Those are all video settings. So you're adjusting brightness/hue/saturation/contrast etc. through your monitor's built in settings right?

brightness and contrast yeah.

gamma through windows.

dunno bout hue/sat etc

edit. i'm just gonna need a new display. i'm pretty sure HP is the world's worst computer manufacturer. every single hp thing [excluding printers] are crap. i'm amazed how dreamworks uses their stuff and makes great animations. that's real talent.

Where did you find the gamma setting in windows?

I wouldn't say that. They make terrific computers and monitors in my experience. Maybe not as good as some other brands but still reasonably good.

Do you really think it would change their business very much if they chose a different OEM like dell?

every single hp item has had serious issues or of cheap quality. i'm never gonna buy hp ever again [except printers]

i have every faith in dreamworks

edit - i'll just buy a new display when this one burns out. in the meantime, a 17 inch, 3d, gaming, glasses free, laptop. i'm not going to find a solution on this monitor. it's like you said,

"Sounds like a shitty LCD monitor..."
