It is coded in Java right? I don't think the GPU matters as much, Java as it is tends to be a bit slow, at least in my experience and from what I see in Minecraft videos. If Minecraft hardware accelerated then it's probably just poor coding on part of the developer.

Because it's coded that way - uses some advanced video card features. There's many indie fully 2D games that use pixel shaders 2.0+ for some effects that won't run on GMA crap.
Java is just a programming language. It doesn't affect cpu vs gpu processing.

There are a number of reasons why minecraft is "slow", be more specific. Part of it is poor optimization of the code, but quite frankly the game logic is fundamentally demanding no matter how you do it (just like emulators). It could be written in c++ and it would have the same performance issues (requiring a fast cpu and such).
