This set of benchs has Cell as fast as a G5 1.6GHZ.
Wiki says Gekko/Broadway has about 50 SIMD instructions which are probably exclusive to it so something still needs to emulated.
It looks to me like the G5 won most of the important tests by a pretty big margin. Which confirms what everyone already knows:
1. That the PPE is a watered down "trim the fat" design made to reduce size and power consumption so that more SPEs could be packed onto the chip
2. That the G5 is faster
3. That the PPE performance is usually inbetween a G4 and a G5.
4. That the IPC is comparable to a G3.
5. That is simply cannot compete with desktop/laptop processors in general purpose performance (unpredictable workloads)

As far as x86 processors are concerned other benchmarks that I've seen show its IPC to be worse than netburst by a pretty significant margin. High end Pentium 4 and Athlon 64 models both kick its ass in general tests. It does outperform pentium III and athlon though. It is comparable to a low end pentium 4 or a typical athlon XP in most tests.

This is why even if someone where to try and make a PPE version of the cpu JIT recompiler I don't think that it's fast enough, even with proper optimizations and the reduced overhead.

True. But we must also remember that most of the games code is going to be basic instructions. Those are rarely going to be encountered in most games.

Yeah, it's not like every vector or matrix computations that are the basis of 3D geometry computations use the Gekko exclusive Paired Single instructions... "rarely going to be encountered", lol.
This is the second time NV has been wrong about dolphin... Whoah.

Then again he's been right about 1000 more times than me so ya know

None of the transformations are done on the GPU side?
Some are, mostly projection. You still need to do culling, distance computations, animation (including stuff like IK), physics, collision checks, etc. on CPU.

It's actually so CPU intensive that some games (Zelda WW comes to my mind) don't even cull terrain and send every vertex to the GPU even if it's not visible, because the GPU has more free time than the CPU.
Oh god.

Well at least with a PS3 you could do all that stuff on an SPE(s).
If we programmed it properly.

This thread is making me want to know PPC assembly, and write this myself regardless of its performance. This is particularly odd as I don't even have a PS3

Markos

A phat PS3 is pretty cheap Wink
(I don't have one either btw, not yet)
Don't but the latest one (SuperSlim) they seem to have another lvl0
Do it!
