the latest 9x drivers are something like 90.xx :|

unless you mean the 9 series which the latest driver is the same as the latest for the 200 series.

Since he's running the German 32bit Home premium version of Vista, I gave this link (http://www.nvidia.de/object/win7_winvist...ql_de.html) as the download for the latest version which is 186.18 for his 9600 GT.

where did he get the advice to install 174.74 then.

oh bugger it, newbie, just sign up at Guru3D and ask them, you'll learn quicker if you jump into the fire instead of running around it.
