The mains lead which puts electricity in the shredder. He's assuming you're rich enough to have an electric shredder.

Oh I see. He meant to say "plug in the shredder's power cord". (The power cord belongs to the shredder therefore by the rules of English shredder comes first and has a 's at the end)

But what he was:

Which doesn't tell me what cord or what it's being inserted into. I thought it was a typo and meant to read "Insert the cord into your shredder." as in put the cord in the shredder and shred it.

If it was a typo, it was just an unclear, yet technically OK sentence. The perfect way of writing it is marginally longer, though. I'd have written 'plug in the shredder', as there's nothing other than a wall socket a sensible person would plug a shredder into.

Yeah that would work. You can insert something into a shredder but you can't plug something into a shredder (other than the power cord).
