Game developers can choose whatever resolution they want for their games. We've seen 3rd party games in both 720p and 1080p for the WiiU.

I know they can have any resolution they want, it's just that I've been hearing (I know specs aren't revealed/leaked yet) that the WiiU isn't powerful enough for 1080p 60fps on games like Assassin's Creed and Batman, for example. I also remember hearing about Nintendo games being 720p too.
Edit: But then again, the Zelda tech demo was 1080p 60fps. Oh well, glad to be wrong, I suppose.

There are a few game developers that have announced 1080p games for the WiiU. But the majority will probably be 720p.

Most major 3rd party Wii U titles (ZombiU and stuff) are 1080p. Nintendo's titles are 720p. Som title from 3rd parties are also 720p. It does al depend, but a solid amount of games are 1080p. The system is plenty powerful.

The GPU is better than that in the XBox 360/PS3 and most games for those two are 1080p@60FPS. This is a letdown (except I was not considering getting a WiiU, so this doesn't affect me).

Got a question about resolution, is it affected/changed by cable type? like for example my ps3, i use an AV cable (Yellow-white-red) to connect it to my TV but the picture quality does improve when you use a HDMI cable. Why is the HDMI clearer than the AV, does the resolution get lowered to 480p or something?

Doing 1080P at 60FPS requires a pretty strong GPU, which neither of the consoles have, including the Wii U.
And FYI, the Zelda demo only ran at (true) 720P at 30FPS.

Or a component AV connection.
The Phono AV specification was never designed to be compatible with HD-like resolutions, as only computers used them then, and they used VGA leads. Even before HDMI was brought out, it had been decided that Phono AV wasn't good enough and S-Video was brought in as well (which was a problem as I've never seen a TV with more than one S-Video lead).
Also, both Phono AV and S-Video are in a scart connector, but those were stupid as they never fit the socket on your equipment, so lost a lot of picture quality that way.
