Super Mario Brothers 3.

SMG 1 (I can't stand 2) is my one of my favorites currently. I haven't had much if a chance to play through the original all the way through, but it is a heck of a lot of fun just because of how challenging it can be (especially if you skip the warp).
The 2d and 3d ones really can't be compared much IMO because they have very different mechanics and goals. Super Mario 3D Land kinda falls in both categories tho.

I always liked Super Mario World for the SNES.

I can't stand the SMG games, at least not on a real Wii. I'd rather have a single controller in my hand, sans useless shaking and waving motions. So far so good in Dolphin though. Super Mario 3D Land ranks 3, quite enjoyable, easy to pick up and stop. I'd say SM64 is number two for me. I remember 1996, when the N64 hit our shores, seeing Mario in 3D and having my mind blown. Number 1 Mario game? It didn't even feature Mario :3 (and no, it's not Mario is Missing...) It was Super Mario Land 3: Wario Land. When I was a kid, this was the GB game I played, until Pokemon came out.

Grew up with it, beaten it a billion times. Easily my favorite.

But the original NES version. Not restyled versions
