I'm starting to think you may be right. I was hoping to be able to save some space in the box with the pico but that may not be possible after all.

I don't understand what's so great about the NES box that you must build a PC in there. Why not just build the box you want without restriction in something that can decently hold the proper hardware?

Hmm. I wonder if you could get a PCIe x16 riser card? That would allow the card to lay parallel to the board for a lot more GPU room.

I would much rather have a nice HTPC like SN3S than an odd NES box with subpar components (although with the OPs budget the components wouldn't change much anyway).

I guess a lot of people have good memories of the NES like ED2 touched on. The reasoning probably goes, someone doesn't use the NES anymore, turning it into an emu-machine loses little if any of the original functionality game-wise (so long as you have a decent NES emulator) and it'll play much more. Plus it's retro, everybody loves retro. Personally, I'd want to make my emu-machine look like custom console though.

I loved the NES and grew up with it, but if it's just too small to hold your hardware, it's just too small to hold your hardware. I'm all for retro and going back to the older stuff just as much as the next guy, but I really don't think you can fit everything you'd need to emulate the GC properly in that box. Maybe something can be worked out, but it won't be what it could have been had you not had that small box restriction. Besides that, I can't see destroying a perfectly good NES for what I consider as a no good reason. Anyway, I wish him luck.

It's not that the NES is too small for the hardware, it's that the hardware is too big for the NES. I already have a cutting edge gaming PC, a decent HTPC and plenty of other electronics and consoles. The only reason I'm doing this build is to fit it into an NES case. It's a challenge and a project that I wouldn't otherwise be undertaking.

I played NES growing up and I simply don't have the space for the various consoles and games library if it weren't in emulator form. If I can't get gamecube or Wii games to work on this build then I can always play those on another more powerful box.

Also, it's not a perfectly good NES. As I stated in the first post, it was broken to begin with.

Anyway, thanks for all the input everyone! I'm going to weigh my options with the CPU and PSU and see what I can make work.
