The problem with this for me is that I stream everything I watch to my iPod, and I've not seen a PVR which you could use as a server to do this from. If I could control it and playback via my iPod, it would be a much better solution for me.
PVRs are just TVs last feeble attempt to catch up to the internet, i agree it is kinda useful but i would rather watch online, besides PVR decoders here cost a quite a bit not to mention the monthly subscriptions that follow.

And there's that too.
HTPC's are awesome! Video, emulators, internet, music... everything. I'm loving mine.
TV stopped being entertaining a while ago for me, with the exception of a few shows. CNN, Dance Moms, Adventure Time, The Mighty Boosh (reruns only), Adventure Time, Futurama, and Regular Show are the only things I look at. Even then, I watch TV for like 1 hour at the most. Pretty much everything else made in America on-air is about as recycled as our washed out movie industry. The internet, oth provides me with an endless source of diversions, be it video, text, or audio. If I needs laughs, there's always something online. I cannot say the same for my TV.

Also, channels that I used to like (Discovery and History) channels don't have anything interesting on at all. I liked learning about ancient Greek warfare or how some of Europe's most famous cities where built, but now all they show are UFOs and Nostradamus' prophecies (I kid you not, I see those on more than anything else). Comcast dropped G4 because it wasn't even a shadow of it's former self. It had nothing but ads playing in the morning, Cops 2.0, and whatever else they could find that was in no way related to tech or gaming. X-Play (which went downhill sometime ago) barely played twice a day. I remember when G4 first came out, it was pretty unique. You could watch a live team death match against players, see previews of the latest games, and see interviews with developers. It was all about gaming. That was way back when though, some 7 or 8 years back.

Guess I'm done ranting. I hold TV in relatively low esteem right now, so Internet all the way. Can't beat YouTube.

Amen to that

Inferior technology vs. superior technology. Gee I wonder who will win.

Logic doesn't work in the real world NV. The inferior tech will win because people understand it better.
How capitalism works:
1. Take superior technology
2. Make it stupid proof
3. Profit

It's already happening. Look at smart TVs.
Haha yeah that is happening. But superior tech only succeed with the ease of use. So I guess we basically agree here.
Depends on whether or not it can survive in a niche market. And there are a number of other factors at play depending on which industry you're talking about.

Take x86 for example:
It's not easier to use. Assembly programming and writing compilers/interpreters was harder than on many competing ISAs.
It was not superior technologically. It significantly impeded the performance and energy efficiency of any microarchitecture using it and offered very little room for future improvement.

Yet it still succeeded for a number of other reasons, the biggest of which was existing software support.

Internet TV will explode and "go mainstream" as soon as big cable/satellite companies figure out how to make the transition and monetize it as much as possible.
Interesting and reasonable enough. I look forward to the future!
