Not true. He has a special streacom case that can dissipate up to 100 watt TDP passively (in a lab, realistically it's more like 85 watts, which is still enough for a normal haswell cpu).

Looking good ShizZy. Now, one of these days, we'll have to benchmark it in Gekko Wink I see you and several other people are trying to tempt me into buying Haswell as well.

Guess I should be on IRC more often as well, I've been quite negligent in that regard, else I would have known that :p
Yeah - I would suspect I could cool an undervolted i5-4670K passively (especially with the IGP disabled). I might hold off on buying the discrete GPU until the HD 8750 series comes out (supposedly Q3 this year), but the goal is to also be able to get 2xIR w/ some AA. I'd definitely need a discrete card for that... Although I might be pleasantly surprised at what the Intel HD 4600 can get me in the meantime Tongue

I'll post some results once I get the rig up and running later this week.

Hey Shonumi!
If you are going to passively cool it why buy the "k"?

Good question. There are a lot of reasons:
  • The only mini-ITX motherboard that's compatible with my chassis cooling system is Z87, so I'm already stuck with the premium motherboard, might as well get a CPU that can utilize it
  • The i5-4670S (65W TDP, 3.1GHz) would be what I originally wanted, but it is OEM only, and the i5-4570S sacrifices the baseclock more than I wanted (although it probably is OK as a last resort)
  • I want full control of undervolting, underclocking (probably to something like 3.2GHz base) disabling IGP, and playing with other setting to improve thermal performance, and it's not clear to me if I have that control with non-K parts (rumor on the streets is that they are pretty locked down compared to IB and SB)
  • I have a MicroCenter near by, so the i5-4670K is only $200
If I can't achieve the desired thermal performance at a clockrate above 3.1GHz, I'll probably return it and try to find an i5-4670S (or settle for a i5-4570S).
Why don't you upgrade your chassis to one of the higher end models?

I am Smile Ordered the Streacom FC5 Evo chassis to accommodate a full-sized discrete GPU (my FC8 Evo is on Ebay right now). Something like this should fit and be fine with the PicoPSU.
Why would you order an FC5 instead of an FC10? Especially considering you already have an FC8!

Btw link to the ebay page please. I want to see how much it sells for.

I didn't see the advantage with the FC10 - I'd bet it cools a little better (although both are only recommended max 95W TDP), but it's like $100 more and quite a bit bigger. Other than that, both can accommodate mITX and mATX boards, as well as a full sized double-slot GPU (granted, in both cases a little hacking is required). As I see it, you pretty much have to have a mITX mobo to do this kind of build (for power reasons) and therefore I wouldn't be able to utilize the two expansion slots on the FC10. So really, it just seemed like wasted space in my media center!

...I may have stretched the truth there with "brand new", but it IS only like 2 weeks old, and I'm including with it all the new hardware from my FC5 Tongue

You sly dog.

Why? I have a dual slot graphics card mounted on my mITX mobo.

I mean it seems like the FC5 is a step down from the FC8 Evo. I thought the point of upgrading your case was to get more cooling potential. Are you at least getting the evo version of the FC5?
