Overall the 965 is faster than the 6100. The 6100 will only close up when all of its 6 cores are utilized properly.
Clearly, the 965 is the better overall choice.

Going by the Cinebench single threaded benchmark, the 965 scores 3941 while the 6100 scores 3758 points.
The 965 is slightly faster than the 6100 even when overclocked.
And it's the same in most other single threaded benchmarks. There isn't such a huge difference as you claim.

Holy shit I was looking at the core i7 965 not the phenom II 965. You're right the phenom II is only slightly faster at its stock speed, when you OC them both the gap widens a bit though. In that case I apologize for trying to correct you.
