Is the starship (overworld) in SMG 1 one of those areas? I now have a 3570K @ 4.4 running the game pretty well in most areas, but in the starship I always notice that if the camera can see the main part of the ship it slows down to about 40-45 FPS.

1x IR, no AA and 16 AF by the way. Temporarily using nVidia GTS 250.
I dont see why you would buy a good cpu and weak gpu.
If you have money for 3570K then atleast spare some money for something better then 550 ti.
For example 560 gtx would be much better card, not to mention 560 ti.
And they are not much more expensive.

Yeah,but there is difference between i5 2300 and i5 3570k !
When someone buys i5 2300 he is clearly on a limited budget and is trying to save some bucks,or he would buy 2500k or 3570k ( or even better ).
So in this case weaker gpu makes sense.
But if you gonna buy best motherboard and cpu, then you shouldn't cut corners on gpu, unless you gonna upgrade soon, but then why buy 550 ti in first place ?
I just got a 550 TI because, in the minimum video card sticky, it can do 4x IR and its cheap. Since I will be using this machine mostly for StarCraft II, Dolphin, and Project 64, the GPU doesn't need to be that powerful. It was worth saving the extra bucks for more storage space / faster HDDs.

I doubt 550 ti can do 4x IR in every game, especially paired with overclocked i5 3570k ( since cpu bottlenecked would be removed )
Altrough its true that emulators in general and dolphin are very cpu heavy,I found some games which were gpu heavy as well, such as last story or xenoblade. I run them at 3x since at 4x they would run slower. And I have 460 gtx which is faster then 550 ti.
NaturalViolence really put a lot of effort in making that thread, and it is really helpful, but I would personally put atleast 560 for 4x not 550 ti.
He put 460 instead of 450,so I dont see why he put 550 for 5xx series.
I know it won't be able to do 4x IR all of the time, but I'm banking on the fact that a supposedly 4x card should be able to do 3x in almost all games, barring some of the more graphically intense games. The most intense games graphics-wise I have are SMG 1/2 and Skyward Sword. As long as those 3 can run at 3x or 2x then I am fine with it.

I'm hooking this up to a 1080p TV, so 4x IR is a little overkill. 3x is already > 1080p so it would give all of the AA effect I would want.

Anyway, that looks like an awesome build. I have the 550 Ti. I would get with some other forum members and ask for other recommendations. on 3x native res at 1080p and 4x SSAA it drops to 15-20 FPS. and that's with a 4.6 GHZ OC on the i5 2500k. Per-pixel lighting seems to drag it down on certain parts of Twilight Princess (WII). It may be because I am currently running a PAL version of the game, but I am soon to change that.

I have that exact case too! It's a beast! I put the Thermalright HR-02 Macho in it. Perfect Fit! Load temps in dolphin at 4.6 GHZ is 50-54 C.

EDIT: You might want to research the board you picked out, I know some of the military class MSI Z77 boards had a limiter on the voltage selector. So beware.

theres a reason my psu cost almost £100, it WILL do 750 watts of power, unlike your <$50 630 watt which probs only pulls about 550 at best. the "as long as it works is fine" motto is stupid, thats why expert companies use the 80+ rating, because it shows quality
I got this for a really good deal (sale+rebate) it is pretty d*mn good Big Grin

It's the opposite (for dolphin)
Nvidia GTX 550 ti has more memory bandwidth and Pixel Rate than GTX 460 .Therefore , it's better choice for price & low power consumtion & anti-aliasing & 4x IR
There is no reason for getting an old GPU such as GTX 460 .
