Not to resurrect this but wouldn't it be better for him to take advantage of the overclock potential of the Sandy Bridge line vs the new Ivy Bridge? Even though it's newer technology it also generates more heat.
Also it puts more money towards a better SSD (size) or allowing him to buy some other PC games.
I actually came back here to read up and see if anyone has posted that the new changes actually made an impact on the performance or not.
I don't have any input on the graphics cards really except for the 600 series does have a lower power draw if you're looking to keep your electricity bill low... But seeing as how you want to drop $2500 on a PC I guess it's not relevant.
Closing... The Cooler Master COSMOS II made me want to build a desktop today. >.<;

Sandy bridge OC slightly higher but also have slightly lower IPC. The performance of the two when OC is basically identical.

It does not generate more heat. It generates less heat and dissipates it less efficiently. Temperature and heat are not the same thing.

Sandy bridge and ivy bridge cpus cost almost exactly the same. K editions cost $15 more on average, hardly enough to buy an SSD. So I'm not sure what you're trying to say here.

It's a lot lower than the 500 series cards, which are currently the most recommended series of video cards for dolphin.

Mainly I wanted to see if the stock/slightly OC'd Ivy Bridges were performing enough to justify the ~$30 (which could be a game or a few extra gb).
That was the new stuff I mentioned.
And yea I worded the heat part wrong its just that I read most people are air cooling ~.2-.3 higher on SB vs IB. So would a cmfortable 4.5ghz SB be better than a 4.3ghz IB with the same components?
I'm pretty novice on hardware but I feel like I see more reasons to save that bit of $ for the safer OC'ing.

Clock rate doesn't matter. Performance matters.
Ivy bridge performs roughly 9% higher than sandy bridge at the same clock rate on average. A 4.3GHz ivy bridge cpu will easily outperform a 4.5GHz sandy bridge cpu.

Same as above. Who cares how high it clocks if its performance is just as good?
The fact that you don't have to OC as high to reach the same performance is an advantage because it allows you to reduce your power consumption.
Ivy bridge performs better than sandy bridge at stock clock rates and about the same (maybe slightly higher) when OC. It also includes a much better IGP, support for pci-e 3.0, and consumes less power both at stock and when OC.
There is absolutely no reason to choose a sandy bridge cpu over an ivy bridge cpu unless either:
1. You can get it for significantly cheaper, not just slightly cheaper
or
2. You like OC as high as possible because it makes you feel better about your epeen
Unfortunately I have seen some people that clearly fit into category 2 because they view OC as a way of life, not as a means to an end (getting better performance).

Get the 3570K unless the 2500K is a bargain.
