Like I said, I don't remember all the history since that was about 7-8 years ago now. But you're right, it was 90nm where the leakage problem started but at 65nm it basically blew up. I was thinking Prescott was a tick, which would have made it 65nm, but it was actually more like a tock. What I remember most was that IMO Northwood was actually pretty good for the time, but Prescott sucked. I had a Northwood based Linux workstation at work (either 3.06ghz or 3.2ghz) that felt awesomely fast. Prescott was what made me dump Intel for AMD. But then AMD dropped the ball and I went back.
Conroe really made me think of the old WWII line "we have awakened a sleeping giant and filled him with a terrible resolve" because it was like Intel was on the warpath.
The tri-gate thing is why Intel is now ~2.5 years ahead instead of just 2.
AMD had copper interconnects before Intel if that counts for anything. AMD's 90nm chips could rival Intel's 65nm in clockspeed. AMD had the density crown before they corrected BD's transistor count.

AMD cut spending in 07 after overpaying for ATI. GloFo is just the result of AMD unable to fund node development.
Hi, everyone. First post here.
I’m not sure if I should start a new threat but since the question I want to ask is CPU-related, I decide to post here.
I’m curious about to which category will Celeron G1610 belong? In terms of running Dolphin, how will it fare against Pentium G2010?
From what I've seen at Intel site, cpuboss and cpu-world, the only differences between the G1610 and G2010 are L3 cache (2 MB vs 3 MB) and clock speed (2.6 GHz vs 2.8 GHz)?
One more thing. Right now I’m on an AMD A4-3400 and having quite decent performance in a couple GameCube games. If I build a new PC using either G1610 or G2010, will I see noticeable improvement?
Thanks in advance for your replies.

Yes , G2010 is much faster than A4 3400 but ... Does the build include graphic card ? You will get poor performance with Pentium if you don't add one
If i was you , i would get either A8 6600K or A10 6800k + A75 FM2 mobo
Both of them are Quad Core , if you overclock them , the Pentium will be left in the dust
And you don't even need a graphic card for them
Hi. Thanks for the reply. (06-18-2013, 12:24 AM)admin89 Wrote: [ -> ]If i was you , i would get either A8 6600K or A10 6800k + A75 FM2 mobo
I think I won’t need the 4 cores or that much graphic processing power from the A10. I’m just a casual gamer. This PC will be used mainly for office stuff and light image editing, with some gaming on the side.

For the graphic card, I think I will go with HD 6450 (or HD 5570 if I really can’t get the HD 6450). Put them on a value H61 motherboard and it will cost less than an A10 build (even with the cheapest A55 board, local price).
With the A4-3400, my current setting is 800x600 screen resolution, auto IR, no AA, and no AF. For me that’s good enough and I assume (correct me if I’m wrong) even an HD 6450 will suffice to play at that setting.
Regarding my question about Celeron G1610, will it perform much lower than G2010? The price difference here is around $15, but if it’s worth it then I’ll get the Pentium.

Yes , it will
Where do you live ?
If you live in US , you can get G2020 or G2120 for cheap price (Microcenter.com)

Hold on ! Have you checked that mobo yet ? H61 support Sandy Bridge CPU(G6xx,G8xx) . If you want to install Ivy Bridge CPu (G2xxx) on it , you must update Bios for Ivy . If that mobo doesn't have Bios Update for Ivy , you will be doomed
The safest way is to get B75 - Ivy Bridge mobo (recommend : Asrock B75)

Well. Seems like it will be the Pentium then.

I live in Indonesia. I've seen G2120 and G2020 at some local online stores but what most stores have, including the stores in my town, is G2010.

I have my eyes on several motherboards and I've checked their sites. Some need a BIOS update and some are Ivy-ready out of the box. And if I need a BIOS update, I can ask the computer store to update it. Some stores will do it for free.

More info about Pentium :
The Pentium Ivy Bridge is almost the same chip as i3 Ivy Bridge
The i3 has Hyperthreading (2 cores 4 threads) while the Pentium doesn't have HT ( 2 cores 2 threads) . HT is useless with Dolphin
i3 has higher clock speed
Basically , despite the name Pentium , you will have almost the same performance as i3 for less money
