GDDR5 doesn't necessarily matter, at least not directly. But video memory bandwidth does matter and GDDR5 does affect that.

Video memory bandwidth = memory transfer rate (also called effective frequency or effective clock rate) x total memory bus bitwidth / 8 (assuming you want it in B/s)

Because GDDR5 is quad pumped instead of double pumped it typically has a higher transfer rate which helps improve video memory bandwidth.

It can make a huge difference or none at all depending on the exact hardware frequencies being compared and the software being used.

though the 580 and 680 have the same theoretical peak bandwidth, the 680 has higher real usage bandwidth in fillrate tests
3 times as much fill rate.
To the OP.

If you try to future-proof anything for 5 years you will be sorely disappointed. The world of tech moves so quickly and you will have far different expectations from your hardware in 5 years time.

lol, well not that much more. 33% more
I own this laptop and it completely destroys MGSTTS with max settings (4xIR, 16xAA) and LLE enabled. Can't speak on other games yet because this is the only one I have tried so far. I highly recommend this!

.....you just posted that doesn't support your earlier statement.

Look at the pixel fill rate on the two cards, the GTX 580 has a 15% higher theoretical pixel fillrate.

Fillrate in the context of a GPU = pixel fill rate in case you didn't know. Squall is correct.
