Yeah but that means I would have to re-complete the same level, with no guarantee.

Save states should work more or less without issue since more-save-fixes was merged to master.
I meant to post this a couple of days ago, but the OP's issue reminds me of this thread. Basically, jamesconner got a black screen every time the game went to a cutscene.

As far as I can tell, it was an issue with the memory card Huh, but if the OP has any issues with Pikmin, jamesconner's settings and Dolphin revision are posted in the thread.
So, I'm begging to think that the savestate was the issue. As, once I restarted the level and did not use any type of save state -- everything functioned correctly.
