It's a hotfix release without any features over 4.0, that's a common version scheme...
I can't help that we did not have a third digit before, it's just how it is. I also can't help that people thought releasing "3.5" after 3.0 was a good idea, it was just stupid.

If 3 digits is what the cool kids use 4 digits must be even better.

I second this. But instead of 5.0, we should give the next Dolphin version a name of it's own, like Dolphin XT and then Dolphin Paradigm, then move back to Dolphin 7 (i.e. Dolphin Pro Ultimate Edition 7.0.1 Service Pack 1).
And make sure we don't use dolphin 7 as a name until the 10th major version of it. You forgot that part. And the part where they randomly switched to using release dates as version numbers....
But to be honest, they would be at svn revision 12000 something right now. That would be as confusing.
