Dolphin, the GameCube and Wii emulator - Forums

Full Version: Decent Specs, but WW runs at 30 FPS, slower when action happens.

Nah, those temperatures are normal for a GPU, so you shouldn't worry.
It's not overheating at all.

What are your CPU temps when idle and playing?

CPU is only about 10-15 degrees cooler. I believe the period where my video card was over heating and causing system locks ups permanently damage my computer. This happened over a period of 2-3 weeks before my computer finally stopped working without freezing up. This was when I decided to see if my heat sink on my card was full of dust, and sure enough, it was.

I've been able to game since I cleaned it out, but like I said, the performance hasn't been the same since. Which is also why I worry about trying to over clock my CPU.

The performance of what exactly?
How did you measure it?

Since you seem to be using the stock fan, I highly recommend you not to overclock.
You need to get yourself a good third-party cooler, something like the CM Hyper+ 212 will do wonders.
Make sure it fits in your case aswell.

With LLE?
Obviously not, but HLE are OK for this game (didn't get any major audio issue with DSP HLE -- only some little desyncs on some cutscenes)...

Not sure how exactly to measure performance. But I've had this computer for 4-5 years and it doesn't run games as well as it used to. I believe the graphics card was slightly damaged when it was causing system lock ups.

The internal fan regularly kicks on while playing games, due to the heat. This was something it rarely did in the past. I now keep the case open with an external fan blowing on the card, just to give it a little help.

Like I said, I'm not incredibly knowledgeable about most of this stuff. Maybe I'm completely wrong in assuming the card and possibly CPU was damaged during the period where my graphics card was over heating.

Damaged GPUs cause driver crashes, BSODs, artifacts and decreased OC potential. I have never heard of damaged cards that run "slower". Maybe it's a driver problem?

Damage would not cause it to run slower, but overheating would. Modern gpus also throttle when they get too hot. It's been this way for years.

But his temps are fine so it's not overheating.

OP try turning down your internal resolution to 1.5x

I'm just wondering if my specs aren't powerful enough to run the Dolphin Emulator. My video card isn't working as well as it did the day I bought it (over heats quite easily) and I think it may be effecting most games I play.

Is my system not strong enough for the Dolphin Emulator, or are there settings I can tweak to help the issue? I've already disabled fog, and tried disabling Scaled EFB copy, which helped the FPS very slightly, but obviously makes the game look like crap.

Any help is appreciated, thanks.

The built-in Wind Waker game profile overrides the Dolphin graphics settings and forces the game to use 'EFB to RAM' (EFB to RAM is slow as ****).

To switch to the much faster 'EFB to Texture' copy method, open the ZWW game properties, click on the 'Edit Config' button and delete these 3 lines:

Code:
EFBAccessEnable = True
EFBToTextureEnable = False
EFBCopyEnable = True

You'll also get much higher image quality as a bonus Smile
Oh wow I completely forgot about that. This game makes extensive use of efb copies for various post-processing effects and therefore takes a HUGE performance hit from using efb copy to ram.
While I'm still running at 30 FPS mostly, I just saw a significant increase in the quality after deleting those three lines.

At "Dragon Island" I believe it's called, when I set foot in the area that has what seems to be volcanic ashes through the air, it doesn't bog down to 25 FPS at 70% Speed. I'm not running at full FPS, but this certainly helped! I'm only seeing a drop to about 28 FPS and maybe 95% speed. Big improvement! Hopefully if this keeps up, I'll be able to enjoy the game.

Thanks a lot =)
