Dolphin, the GameCube and Wii emulator - Forums

Full Version: Decent Specs, but WW runs at 30 FPS, slower when action happens.

You should be getting full speed with that CPU with WW, not sure where you're going wrong though.
There is your main problem, you'll need to overclock your CPU to 3.xGHz if you wish for a more consistent (near) fullspeed experience.
Do check out what temperatures you get right now by using software such as RealTemp while playing Wind Waker.

No, he doesn't need to overclock his CPU. I've been playing Wind Waker on my crap Core 2 Duo E4500 @ 2.2 GHz at fullspeed in all places and events of the game...

Well I don't have a program that detects the heat. But I'd say roughly between 115-130 degrees. I keep my side panel open and an external fan blowing directly onto the video card while playing games. This issue didn't start until I let the heat sink fill with dust. This started crashing my computer. Once I cleaned it out, I was able to reformat.

I'm not sure if Graphics Cards slowly lose performance, but I believe that it took some sort of damage while it was over heating and locking up my computer. Maybe I'm completely wrong on that, but it seems to not be performing as well as it did when I first bought it.

Hmm, wish I was more computer savvy to figure out what may be causing the issue. I knew going into it that the Dolphin Emulator was a beast. I'll do some messing around in the morning, hopefully I can change something.

With LLE?

Download HWMonitor, and you'll be able to monitor your CPU and GPU temps.
Tell us what they are when you play Wind Waker for instance, but also when it's idle.

Kurise Wrote: [ -> ]But I'd say roughly between 115-130 degrees
If it really appears to be at this insane temperature, do NOT play games!
You will burn the GPU.

Ah... I remember when I did that with my previous PC.
OEM PC's from DELL/HP, etc, never have good cases. If you get another (good) case, your temperatures will drop by a large amount.

Downloaded HWMonitor. Idle it says Value 67 Degrees Celsius , Min 67 C/154 F, Max 68 C/154 F

So yeah, my shits getting really hot. That being said, it's been like this for quite a long time. I'd say I cleaned it out about a year ago, and ever since it's had the heating issues. Like I said previously, I think it was slightly damaged when it was freezing my computer. Again, maybe I'm completely wrong by saying that, but I know it never go this hot a couple years ago and the performance seems to suffer.

Running Wind Waker on its open credits I get 71 C/159 F Value. The min being only a few degrees cooler. Max is going up to 72 C/161.

I play Starcraft 2 and Tribes Ascend regularly. I'm able to run most decent games, the exception being the newer games like Battlefield 3.

Checking the Core temperatures gives about the same as the video card. Seems like I have a serious issue with over heating and that seems to be causing my issues. I can only assume the graphics card freezing my system has caused permanent damage. Though, I'm currently an unemployed student that's broke. Gonna be a bit before I can build a new comp. Thanks for the help guys!
Don't ever compare Dolphin to PC gaming . Dolphin is a dual core application while PC gaming can use up to 8 cores
Dolphin -> Beast CPU + mid-class GPU
PC gaming -> Beast GPU + mid-class CPU
Your CPU is fast only if you overclock it (3.0-3.6Ghz) .
2.6Ghz Core 2 duo / Core 2 Quad is slow for most games
Some games even need i5 2500k @ 4.4Ghz+

Sorry wasn't trying to compare Dolphin to regular gaming. Just saying to the guy who told me not to play any games, that I'm able to play most games just fine.

I knew before I downloaded Dolphin that it was quite a beast. But I think may computer may be a little too run down to perform for Dolphin.

Thanks again for the replies and help. This seems like a pretty awesome community of gamers.

Fahrenheit or Celsius?

Very few GPUs can reach 115-130 C without shutting down.

115-130 F on the other hand is completely normal.

I made a reply above giving the temperature. That estimate was for Fahrenheit. It's operating at about 150-160 degrees fahrenheit.
