I always like to buy a power supply that is substantially above my needs in case of future upgrades. But that's up to him, just my two cents.

You won't reach 500W anytime soon unless you Crossfire/SLI, add a dozen HDDs and overclock like crazy.

Holy crap, to bad I found a decent one in a dumpster last year with the cables all busted up.
I just soldered them back and duct tape it.

Nah just kidding. It's an excellent advice, NEVER be cheap on PSUs!
To an extent, that isn't necessary (not that I'm saying you should get one from a skip).

When I bought mine I went for the one which cost £5 more than the cheapest equivalent, checked a review, and bought it. I can guarantee it's safer than the one which came with the computer, as most of the negative reviews for my PC are "the PSU blew up and took my motherboard with it". As I said, the one I've got now is definitely safer.

Appreciate the tip.

The 3570k you're talking about is this one, right?

And the 3770k you're talking about is this one?

The difference is the first is the i5 and the second is the i7 - does that impact Dolphin? Or are they both so fast that performance is identical?

And the reason you suggested I simply get a better version of the i7 Core chip is that it'll be compatible with my existing motherboard - just swap out the chips? Makes sense, and sounds pretty easy.

Thanks again. I've learned a lot today!
The 3770K has hyperthreading, something which Dolphin, games and a lot of applications don't care about.

What motherboard do you have? All it says on Newegg is "Intel P67".
Only some P67 motherboards will support the Ivy Bridge with a BIOS update.
So you'll have to check if yours will do.

Do know that your CPU is already really fast and able to play a lot of games flawlessly.
It's just that you can't overclock to get better speeds in certain demanding games.

I don't think its worth it to upgrade from a 2500(K)/2600(K) to a 3570(K)/3770(K).

My current system uses 639w at load with 2 HDD, 1 medium end graphics card, and a barely OCed cpu.

Yeah, I'm sure you're aware that components get more efficient and use less power.

Anyway, how did you meassure that? Or did you use the calculator? If so, mine only uses 397W.

Thanks. I think you're right - I should really stop and see what I've got before continuing to spend money.

My NewEgg order will arrive tomorrow, so I'll get the new PSU and video card going, play with the setup a bit, and then go from there.

I haven't gamed on a PC in a long time - before my most recent purchase two months ago, I hadn't bought a new computer in seven years. I think I'll look into some PC games tonight and maybe download some demos in anticipation for tomorrow.

For Dolphin, I'm currently running one HDMI out to my HDTV with two long USB extension cords (keyboard + mouse, and Controller) so as to play from my couch. The setup has worked pretty well for Wind Waker in 480p - its nice to use a controller other than the GameCube controller - so I'm really excited for 1080p!
