that tickbox down the bottom will show the hex range from FFFFF to 655 something or whatever

Wow you are missing the point here. You should see something like this.



That box on the left with the plus in it, is your main stick. When you move your main stick that plus should also move. Does it only track to the edges or can you move it any where around the box ( accept corners )?
