I currently have a Athlon II X2 3ghz with hd 4870 and 4 GB ram windows 7 64 bit
However I am wondering if its worth it to upgrade to a i3 from this? Will I get significant performance improvement?
Also Could I stick with my AMD board and buy a Phenom II X2 and OC it? I have a crappy ECS 780GM mainboard black so I am not sure here on what steps to take.
I was considering buying a Wii but after seeing the games in 1080p here I can't stand wii graphics.
The Main games I wanna play is all resident evil and all Metroid Games
I read somewhere that intel CPU are significantly better but if I could just buy a AMD phenom II and do it would save me a ton
if youre serious about getting it to run most wii games at 1080p... and stable, you should really push for the 2500k or 2600k and OC those, 8gb of ram (its super cheap anyway) and decent dx11 video card. if you're building it yourself it shouldnt cost too much and will last you quite a while.

odd.... why cant i edit my post....
anyway, meant 2600k, not the 2700k. no need to blow that much XD
I fail to see how on earth 8GB of ram is going to do anything extra.
Does DX 11 cards do significant performance leap over my DX 10 HD 4870?
I currently run New Super Mario at perfect 60 FPS with my current system at 1080p
I am concerned about the CPU I have a Asus Xonar DX sound card also.
HMm currently Donkey Kong gives 30 to 45 FPS
To slow I would say wonders how much a core i3 would give and a phenom II X2 or a i5
ok little update
I get 45 FPS around 70% speed most of the times. Some slow down to 22 and 30 fps very rarely
I need technical information on what the intel offers over this AMD that will be of benefit to me
Most people here will tell you that Intel's Sandy Bridge chips perform better than AMD's when it comes to Dolphin. If you can wait, Ivy Bridge chips will be out in a bit, and you should be able to get even better performance, though I don't know exactly how much. It's all about the architecture.
I wouldn't say that 2500K or 2600K are requirements for 1080p gameplay, depending on the games you want to play. The Internal Resolution depends heavily on what GPU you have; the HD 4870 ought to be enough, looking at
this thread. Dolphin tends to use 2 cores at the most, so more cores won't necessarily give you better speeds. Some games do need an overclocked CPU to effectively reach and maintain fullspeed; others, I believe, can't reach fullspeed even with today's chips. That said, I would recommend either aforementioned i5 or i7 model. Some of the Metroid games are demanding, but check the Dolphin Wiki to see what other people have gotten and what their specs were.
As far as I know, most often times Dolphin's DX9 plugin is faster than the DX11 and OpenGL plugins. DX11 probably won't be an advantage to you unless you come across a game that DX11 plays better (i.e. fixes graphical glitches).
Also, no, RAM does not play a significant part in Dolphin's performance, as far as I know. As long as Dolphin has enough, it'll play just fine.
^ thanks very much.
I wonders when Ivy Bridge will be out. Hmm
But tell me this is it really worth the extra cash for the i5 over the i3?
How much percent increase would you predict? Unless offcourse they add quad core support for dolphin in the near future?
Ivy Bridge should be out around April, thereabouts. I have no idea what models Intel will push out first.
Like I said, you should check out the
Dolphin Wiki and search for the games you want to play. If people report getting decent speeds with the hardware you want to buy, then that's a good sign. The main advantage of the 2500K and 2600K is that they have unlocked multipliers, so overclocking them is a breeze. You should really investigate what the overclocking possibilities are for the CPU you want to buy.
If I remember correctly, Dolphin doesn't support quad-core processing because it's not effective to split the processing among that many cores. It might happen someday, if Intel or AMD ever adds magic to their chips. :p

Aah yes best reply ever. I googled and googled for days and then decided to create an account here not sure if I would get my question answered but I am in luck.
This dolphin wiki site is amazing exactly what I am looking for. I can't thank you enough my friend

Only if you take advantage of their overclocking capabilities.
If you don't plan to overclock your CPU, then go with i3 2120 but If you overclock then go with i5 2500K
i3 2120 should be a huge improvement over your Athlon II in dolphin emulator. Even if you overclock your Athlon to 4GHz, i3 2120 should still be faster.

funny thing is my friend gets same fps with his i3 in donkey Kong Country return as me with my athlon. I find this funny indeed.
i3 is perfect for my budget however if I can buy a phenom II X4 and OC with a cooler and oc it to 4ghz and get same performance of a i3 at 3.4 ghz then it may be better i buy the phenom since i can keep my same mainboard
