Hi,
Right now i have an i7 2600k overclocked to 4.2 with a gtx260 ssc edition. I can get my hands on a gtx285 ssc edition for $125.00. I was wondering if it's worth the upgrade. I use this pc just for emulators and movies connnected to a 1080 plasma. Also would i benefit going from 4.2 to 4.5? That's the most i can hit on this cpu without bsod.
Thanks for the help.
Just using it for emulators? Same here. I dunno about that upgrade. The GTX 260 should be enough to handle Dolphin quite well. The better the card, the higher you can raise your IR and AA without a performance hit. The GTX 285 does support DX11, but if DX9 works well enough for you, that's not much of an advantage. Games on Dolphin tend to demand more from the CPU than the GPU.
As for your CPU, I guess it'll allow you to play games like SMG or Metroid Prime Trilogy with minimum slowdowns, but only if you're getting slowdowns in the first place at lower speeds.
It's not worth it IMO.

Is there a need for that?
4.2 is plenty fast already; unless you're struggling to get fullspeed in a game, keep it at 4.2.

Is there any benefits on going from dx9 to dx 11 on dolphin and pcsx2?

Games are funning fine on 4.2, I was just wondering if the extra 300mhz makes a difference.
Lol, I don't know personally. I'm running Linux so it's OpenGL only. DX11 might be needed if you're encountering speed or graphical issues with DX9, but from what I hear, the DX9 Dolphin plugins are faster than either OpenGL or DX11. If you have no issues with DX9, DX11 won't give you any advantages.
PCSX2, this emulator I have not tried. Again, I've heard that the DX11 plugin runs faster, but if you get no problems with DX9, it's not worth it.
I've emulated just about everything I wanted to with my machine, but PCSX2 for Linux is 32-bit only. At the moment, I'm way too lazy for figure out how to compile 32-bit multilibs or even setup a dual-boot with LILO.
I BELIEVE that dolphin is almost always better with dx9 (<-- actually I know this

) and PCSX2 is better with dx11 (I have only heard this haven't used PCSX2 much

)
Thanks for the help guys. Got me a gtx470 sc for the same price I was going to get the 285. Thanks again.
Why don't people use this? I know it isn't 100% accurate but it makes buying much simpler.

I don't know either Runo, but I know I did. It's why got my GTX 550 Ti rather than the lackluster GT 520 that Cyberpower wanted to sell me. That and the "Minimum Specs - video card" thread really helped me.
And to str8desifer, nice buy! Sounds like a good bargain to me.

GTX 285 and GTX 260 are directx 10 card .Only Nvidia 400 , 500 or 600 series support directx 11
With that price , you can get GTX 460 for the same performance
Or wait for Nvidia 28nm 600 series this summer : Less heat -> Overclock higher , low noice fan ; support directx 11.1 , much faster than 400 and 500 series
