do i have to first finish the gamecube verison of this game before playing the wii verison? and is it possible to use the wii remote on a gamecube remote?
when i push new game, it keeps asking me for a save file

You don't have to, there is a problem with the latest SVN for Tales of Symphonia DotNW. Just use older SVN (below 3000 for sure)
I think you can't, but you can use gamecube remote for wii games though.
