I'm currently using 1.5x internal resolution and getting occasional slowdowns in Skyward Sword. (especially at night in Skyloft)
If I added another HD 6870 in crossfire, could I go all the way to 4x without lag?
No,crossfire or sli isn't utilized by dolphin. And the slowdowns you are getting are probably not due to your gpu, but cpu and perhaps the shader cache of dolphin, there is no way 1.5 internal resolution will cause a bottleneck to that gpu.

No? Then assuming I overclock my CPU and adjust the shaders, what can I do to widen the neck of my internal resolution's bottle?
A 6870 is already well above the requirements for 4x IR.

What do you mean "widen the neck of my internal resolution's bottle"? That makes no sense to me.
Internal resolution is not your bottleneck. Unless you're using 9xSSAA changing it isn't going to affect your performance at all. Your problem must lie elsewhere. But without any info. (settings) we can't tell you what's wrong. Like link to the past said dolphin gains no benefit from SLI/crossfire setups so adding a second gpu would be a complete waste of money.

Seeing the settings your gpu is definitely not the culprit. Btw Zelda SS is a 30 fps game, not a 60 fps one, unless you have audio throttle enabled you are running the game at double speed, set frame limit to auto.

Wow, that really helped. Thanks! But now dark lines are flashing on walls and floors... Used to be just little squares zipping across the top of the screen and they were easy to tune out. :/
Make sure you are using dolphin r7719 for zelda SS
