Hello. I'm really enjoying this great emulator for the most part, but there's just one small thing I'm trying to figure out. Also, this is my first time posting here, so hopefully this is the right place.

Anyway, I'm playing the Japanese version of Skyward Sword, and it includes furigana, which is basically annotations above the characters to show how they're pronounced (so Japanese schoolchildren who don't know all the characters yet can play the game). However, even if it can be useful at times, I find them really distracting and would like to get rid of them if possible.

It turns out that you can actually make them not show up on a real Wii by going into the system settings and changing the aspect ratio to 4:3. Why they did it that way instead of just including it as an option in-game is beyond me, but that's how it works. So my question is: Can I do that in Dolphin in any way to get rid of those annoying annotations?

I managed to get the system menu to work, but trying to access the settings menu results in a black screen. That's apparently a known issue from what I've been able to see. I tried using the "Force 4:3" option in graphics config too, both at native and 3x resolution, with no effect. Is there any other way I can get to Dolphin to act as though the internal aspect ratio setting was set to 4:3?

Thanks in advance for any replies.

There is an Aspect Ratio setting in the Wii tab of the main Dolphin Configuration window. Setting it to 4:3 should do the trick.
Thanks a lot for the help. That did the trick, but now I'm (obviously) stuck with huge bars on the top and bottom of the screen, no matter what I do with the graphics settings. I guess the answer is going to be "no", but I want to ask just in case...is there any way I can make Dolphin display in 16:9 while still making it think the system is set to 4:3?

I've also noticed several different files in the "Fonts" folder when I go into properties and look at the file system for the game. Is there any way I could mess around with those, such as trying to delete one of them to see if that gets rid of the annotations?
You know what, don't bother digging around the files and folders in the ISO and changing anything since I doubt it will work.
As far as I know there isn't an option to run 16:9 in a 4:3 mode other then maybe the Widescreen hack in the hacks section of the graphical settings.
Nah, the widescreen hack didn't work either. I guess I'll just have to deal with those annotations then. Thanks for the suggestion anyway.
Dolphin has a crop setting in the advanced section of the graphics settings. This might be useful for you. What do you have your fullscreen resolution set to?
I've tried that too, but it didn't do anything. Thanks for the suggestion anyway. As for resolution, I'm usually using Dolphin on my TV with 1920x1080, but I've also tried 1680x1050 on my PC monitor. I've tried all the different settings for the internal resolution too, by the way.
Try setting the fullscreen resolution to a 4:3 resolution like 1280 x 960.
I gave it a try, but I'm still getting those huge black bars, even with widescreen hack and/or crop checked.

I'm still not sure if Nintendo actually intended the furigana to disappear in 4:3 mode or if it's just a bug of some sort. Isn't there any way to find out what happens when it's set to 4:3 mode and replicate that part without actually using 4:3?

Anyway, again, thanks for the continued attempts to help, much appreciated.
I still have no idea what it's supposed to look like or what it looks like (for you) since you haven't provided any screenshots. I don't think I'll be of much help until I get those.
