In that case, I can only afford the monitor right now.

I just bought these speakers and subwoofer and they are brilliant.
Absolutely perfect sound for my tastes, cheap or not.
Fills my room at least.
I can hear Bass and little nuances like grass in Crysis.
Sound has never particularly bothered me, anyway.

(I suppose it's because I'm used to the speakers built into the T.V.?)

So monitor would be all I need then.

Newegg has this one on sale:

A good sound card for less than $50?

Neither of those exists. If you're on a tight budget I would recommend headphones instead of speakers.

Here is a decent monitor within your price range: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824009266

Even the worst standalone speakers will seem like a huge step up compared to integrated TV speakers.

Kind of like how terrible graphics cards are still better than integrated GPUs.
Not an audiophile.
Speakers and sound card are fine, IMO.
Would like higher res monitor, tho.
That one is perfect.

You don't need to be an audiophile to hear the massive difference in sound quality between good speakers/audio cards and cheap speakers/integrated DSP.

Go ahead and buy that monitor if you can. You haven't lived until you have a 1080p or higher monitor. And I do think that having a good monitor takes priority over good speakers/headphones.

The great thing about headphones is that you can get good headphones for a fraction of the price of good speakers and they will actually surpass good speakers in audio quality. They are extremely cost efficient compared to speakers.
Maybe get some better speakers/sound card once I'm out of college?
Buying this monitor with my grad money.
This sound is more than good enough for now.
And I despise headphones.
Fair enough. I prefer speakers too, but I have a good set of headphones because quite frankly a $70 pair of headphones can outclass a $700 pair of speakers.

Sure. I didn't say now.
Meh.

The speakers that came with my 1999 celeron (that I used for 7 years. >.<) were far wore than the ones on the T.V.
Even as a child I knew they were terrible. (So tinny.)
So its all good.Big Grin
Yes. Anything with a 1080p resolution is going to be a huge step up from what you have now.

Even with settings lowered in more demanding games.
This is why PC gamers exist.
PERFECTION.
