Have I been fooling myself this entire time?

This is what I have.
Whoa... I just switched from 1280 x 768 to 1360 x 768 and the image quality is just as high as 1080i is.
Same reason my vizio 32" 1366 x 768 goes up to 1080p, it just downscales the input to 1366 x 768 before displaying it.
Despite my tv going up to 1080p as far as input signals go it can only display a 1366 x 768 image so it is listed as 720p (and rightfully so). However according to google some 1366 x 768 LCDs have "1080i" listed on the box just because they can take in a 1080i signal, which is stupid and false advertising.
Use 2x IR with 1366 x 768 resolution (although you probably won't be able to tell the difference between 1.5x and 2x since it's such a small difference between 1280 x 720 with upscaling and 1366 x 768 without upscaling). If you went for the GTX 460 you could probably do 1.5x with 9xSSAA without any slowdowns, and that would look REALLY GOOD.
Many plasmas and HD CRTs on the other hand were true 1080i displays. They supported a physical display resolution of 1920 x 1080 but couldn't scan/pulse fast enough to use that framerate at 60hz in progressive scan so they had to run in interlaced mode at that resolution.
When you get your rig up and running in a few months PM me and I'll teach you how to force 4xSSAA in dolphin on an nvidia card.
I might go for a 460 if they ever go down...
otherwise, 3x internal would look fine.
Any other advice before I go?
Also, loads of thanks, now I don't have to worry about 1080p with how clear this is.
I'd take jaggies over clarity any day!

Nope. That's pretty much everything unless you have another question.

In case you haven't figured it out, I'm going for something relatively cool,
and this fits the bill!

The 'egg is currently out of Tuniq x2.
Is this almost as good?

Yes.
So, uh....
My res is at 1360 x 768, yet when I play at 1440 x 900 or 1080i,
the image is less clear but FAR less jagged. (Project64)
Not sure what to do here.

Welcome to Anti-Aliasing. The edges are blurrier but 'jaggies' are removed.

Well, should I run a lower res with 4x aa or 1080i with no AA?
They look about the same and 1080i takes more power.(At least on my rig.)
However, with 1080i, my view area SEEMS to be higher.
P4 2.0 ghz
Ati Radeon x1550
1gb ddr corsair....

I need to know what resolution you have nvidia control panel or catalyst control panel set to.
And which resolution you have set dolphin to. Only then can I determine what is going on.
Either the video drivers or dolphin or the display is downscaling. What your describing sounds like a box filter or bilinear.

Oh god you really need the new rig. Keep in mind the internal resolution is what resolution you are rendering the game at (which affects how much GPU power is needed). What you're talking about is the output resolution of dolphin. Which is the resolution that dolphin scales the image to before outputting. You have likely kept the IR scale on auto so it's changing the IR in response to you changing the output resolution.

No...
Dolphin on this rig WON'T happen, and I'm comfortable with that, so I'm not gonna try to run it.
Still on the old comp, just working with PJ64.
It's 1360 x768 native on a 720p TV
and I'm just asking which of these 3 is the best to use,
1360 x 768, 1440 x 900, or 1080i
(Clearest, jagged, least view) (Middle) (Muddy, almost no jaggies, most view.)
