Meh.

Can't vouch for much having gone from 256 mb to 512 mb to 1 gb of ram.
They ARE faster, but I probably wouldn't be able to tell a difference.

8GB,47.99$.(And comes with a free 4GB SDHC card! Woohoo!)

Problem solved.

And I can say goodbye to either the i5 or the gts 450!

I thought you had at least 20 bucks to spare for twice the memory, but i guess i was wrong. Also, aren't you getting a GTX 550 Ti?

Nah.

Prices change. (Specifically, dat PSU. From -25.00 off to -15.00 off to -10.00 off at one point.)

Either way, I wouldn't be able to afford 2 x 4 ram without sacrificing something else.
And I would prefer to have a video card with at least SOME staying power.
That doesn't make your recommendation any less appreciated, though.

The GTS 450 isn't a bad card by any stretch, though.
(And with the kind of gaming I do, mostly older games and emu's it could potentially last me 5-6 years!)
Quote:I actually only plan to get 1 stick of 4gb ram. (Bit better for the future.)

Really bad idea. That will cut your memory throughput in half since with 1 DIMM you will only be able to run your ram in single channel mode, not dual channel. It has nothing to do with capacity, the speed of the memory will be halved if you don't run them in dual channel mode (which requires at least 2 dimms).

Just get a 2 x 2GB kit. You'll be happier.

Quote:Actually, it's 200 mhz.

Oh god. Well you can expect your new memory to be somewhere in the area of AT LEAST 6 times as fast, probably a lot faster. I need to look at some old memory benchmarks before I can get a good precise number.
I dunno then.

I just don't know.

Where's that old processor comparison at?
(J/K.)

You don't know what?

I don't know if this new build is worth the trouble.

I mean, Crysis and Dolphin are really little more than curiosities at the end of the day.

I spend most of my time reading, watching YT, and playing stuff like SPORE.

I guess overkill is a quite a good thing then!Rolleyes

You picked the two single hardest things to do for most mainstream consumers, top of the line gaming and up to date emulation. And you want to do it PERFECTLY on a LOW BUDGET. That of course is not possible but it doesn't hinder the fact that the hardware will still be over an order of magnitude (10x) faster in every way and almost two orders of magnitude (100x) faster in some areas. The fact of the matter is your current hardware is horribly out of date for anything, no matter how you look at it.

Actually, I don't want "perfection."

I just want to be able to come across a game and have an 80% chance of running it well.
(Compared to a 20% chance.)

Not trying to run SMG or get Crysis at 60 fps @ 1080p here.
(More like SMS and Crysis at 30fps @ 720p!)

I just don't know how much power I need.

I suppose an i5-2400 and GTS 450 are fine...

I just want a build that lasts for me.
