Well, that was educational. We figured out what went wrong with me trying to netplay with my friends earlier: the buffer.
You see, apparently what the buffer does is determine the sync time between when a player inputs a command and when that command reaches the game. When playing with my friends, it told us to use a buffer of 3 or something. Unfortunately, trying to make the game sync the player inputs this closely slows the game down by a lot, and it made us desync repeatedly.
When I played with RROD however, we eventually experimented with using a higher buffer of 50; the game speed was perfect with the stipulation of the player input falling behind by about a half a second or something. After that we lowered it to the default 20, and the game still ran totally smoothly whilst cutting down the input lag even further, about to as much as I usually experience with online play. More than satisfactory.
So yeah, it's good to know that netplay with such hardware-intensive games is possible. If the developers of Dolphin can figure out GBA and Wiimote support for netplay, I foresee great things in this emulator's future.
