I never did understand why the Wiimote and GC Pad icons were people (or looked like them anyway)... I look forward to seeing the new designs!

We can't use that for the obvious reason of copyright infringement :/

this would be good enough for the wiimote icon, it just needs to be adapted to the current icon style.

Yes, I know, that is why I said that is for reference only...(and the icon have poor quality)
I think it's difficult to draw icons with that colorful and roundy style because we don't know exactly how the original artist drew them.
Hotkey icon would be something like this (but with at least 3 keys, and possibly without the label):
