Gotta love marketing... But no, in real life use it doesn't boost that high. You can go here to see the real turbo speeds -
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Core_i7_microprocessors#Mobile_processors
Pay attention to the leftmost number in the turbo column. That's how much the multiplier can cycle when all cores are active. So in the case of the 740QM, real world turbo speed is 1.73GHz + 1*(1.73GHz / 13). If you were to turn off two cores, it would be 1.73GHz + 6*(1.73GHz / 13), but I won't get into all that... It's simpler to just buy a dual core if you're gonna start disabling lol

Ah, found another laptop with intel core i5-2410M processor.
I'll be buying a laptop tomorrow. Tried googling some, but they seem just as good? or which one should i go for?
intel core i5-2410M vs intel core i5-480m
edit: oh, just noticed the 2410 has a lower clock speed. so the 480 still wins if we're talking for dolphin emulator only?

Arrandale i5-480M has 2.93 GHz maximum turbo frequency for one or both CPU cores:
http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_i5/Intel-Core%20i5%20Mobile%20I5-480M.html
Sandy Bridge i5-2410M has 2.7 GHz max turbo frequency for 2 CPU cores and 2.9ghz for single core (Dolphin uses 2 core btw)

According to my research , Sandy Bridge is 400Mhz faster than Arrandale .

the performacen per clock with sandybridge is a lot better
10-20% more power with the same clock
thats why ~200-400mhz
