Doesn't the video encoder/decoder pipeline on sandy bridge handle H.264 and MPEG-4 AVC encoding/decoding? I would expect that to be a lot faster than x264, and bulldozer doesn't have any fixed function hardware for this so it will have to use software to do it.

Edit: Yes, it does. Quicksync supports MPEG-4 AVC, VC-1, MPEG-2, and H.264. Don't use x264 if you're on sandy bridge, quicksync will be way faster.
Quote: Normally Intel desktop chips utterly destroy amd chips in superpi (that particular benchmark always tends to favor intel chips significantly for some reason, probably has something to do with SSE)
SuperPI uses x87. Not useful as a benchmark but its fast and runs on not quite 100% stable OCs so its still popular.

quicksync is, as I understand it, a gpu decoder, no? x264 is a software H.264 encoder...

edit:
ah i see that it also has encoder support, but like any other gpu h.264 encoder, the quality is shitty, and no support for 10 bit.

to use quicksync you have to acces SB's IGP
not accessible when using sandy with P67 board and when using discrete graphic (except on Z68 board that enble both IGP and discrete via lucid virtu)

lol, can't really test quicksync, since i use p67 board. so i can't use IGP. but i can wait 15 minutes to convert 2 hour bluray movie into iphone profile using x264 software mode Big Grin
i won't bother with gpu encoder anyway even if it was available for me. Tongue

anyway, seems little by little detail are given out regarding bulldozer, i suspect by next week we'll have full official bench.

... singlecore operation...
intel wins every Wink

And add nothing to this discussion.
why should I?
You're right, I should have ignored you.
amd is like toyota... just bullshit and still pretty for asians
