I actually wanted to buy mine without a data plan and primarily use wifi, but no carrier where I live allows that. At least, none with decent coverage.
Problem is smart phones are constantly sending and receiving certain amounts of data that is excluded from any cap if there is one, where if you're charged by certain rate per mb, you're gonna end up paying more.
Thats what the carriers want you to think. What they dont tell you is that its a non-issue if you turn off cellular data in your settings. Cant send/recive if its not connected to the data portion of the cellphone network.
It's not the carrier, it's google that sends and receives data, mainly a lot of times for market/vending.apk. Doing this can eventually cause stability issues with your phone.
Since I loved this phone back when I had it when I saw it on Amazon going for $249 new and between $120 - $150 used I managed to snag a used Droid X for $144. It is great because I will own the phone so all I need to do is get it activated. I am trying to figure out if I can get it activated through Cricket or another provider other than Verizon or AT & T.
It may not be the best out there now considering it's two years old but it is definitely a hell of a lot better than my cheap Tracfone. I also liked this phone a lot better than the Samsung Galaxy S. Eventually when I have the case I may purchase a Droid Bionic 4G or Droid Razr once they go down in price considerably.
Now you just need to root and install ICS.
Got an Galaxy S 2 myself, awesome phone.
Right now I am trying to get the phone flashed to use Cricket, not only is it a long complicated process, I also can not get a hold of the required applications to get the job done. It requires CDMA workshop which costs $100..

the fuck man. if there is no connection method enabled there is no way any app or feature can do any data transfer. and no, that wont make your phone unstable unless you dont know wtf youre doing
Just found out that my phone which came with Adroid 2.3.4 (4.5.621) can not be rooted currently. The only way of rooting is a shady method that I am not sure what it will do to the phone.

Because Titanium Backup, SD Booster and Adfree require a rooted phone. I've tried three different one click root methods which all fail to root the phone and give superuser. The phone is running Gingerbread 2.3.4 (4.5.621) which can not be rooted currently according to what I've read.
ye but HOW have you tried rooting it, and is the shady method you mentioned and for those 3 apps i wouldn't bother rooting it

I've tried the one click root exploits which fails. The only way to root 2.3.4 (4.5.621) is to load up Ubuntu Linux and flash an EU Milestone X .604 sbf, then install a custom rom and gain root access from there.
