I signed up for a new Verizon wireless account and got a free DroidX. On Newegg the DroidX is free when signing up for a new Verizon wireless account. I'm going from a crummy Tracfone with minimal features so I could use some recommendations for apps, games and anything else I should need to know or look into.

The phone has already shipped and should be here by early next week at the latest. I'll be sure to post some pictures when I receive the phone.
First thing, root the phone and get rid of most of the crap (bloatware) that came with it. Get yourself a decent size SD card and get some apps/games/movies/music. There are tons of apps (and apps that only work with a rooted phone) that you'll want to get. See if you can root the phone properly first, then see where you're at.

Disclaimer: Sometimes rooting your phone could cause it to brick if you don't know what you're doing, do so at your own risk. I just rooted my Galaxy Prevail with ease.
The only thing I'm afraid of if I root it is bricking the phone and not being able to get a replacement. I didn't pay for the protection plan when signing up, but from what I understand that only covers replacement of the phone when out of the contract, replacements are provided as long as I'm still under contract. Someone elsewhere mentioned I should install Cyanogen mod but not any other suggestions besides that.

Well yes, that is everyone's concern when they root a phone, but chances are that it will not brick. If you're happy with the phone as is, leave it alone, but it could be so much better.

How easy is it to root a phone such as the Droid X?
Thanks, looks simple enough I guess, at least not as complicated as fully softmodding a Wii on the latest firmware and system menu. Tongue

It also appears the phone can be easily unrooted.
Yay. Big Grin

Just checked tracking information and my phone is on the truck for delivery today.
I recently got a HTC Desire, it seems to drain the whole battery in 1 day of stand-by, is the battery faulty you think? (The sign in the store said 450 hours for one of the other HTCs)

My other theory is that it's not quite on stand by (I just press the power button once and it goes black, when I return all the aps are still running, IDK if you can exit them other than pressing the back button 100 times)
You have to manually kill the apps in a task manager app otherwise they stay running. There are even some apps that always stay running that cannot be stopped or deleted, that's why rooting the phone and getting rid of those is a good idea.
