Also, I expect them to fix a little more the 64 bit compatibility, which is becoming more mature since its debut in XP 64 (which sucked hard). Vista was better than xp on this point but had major driver incmpatibilities. 7 has almost perfect 32bit aplication compatibility on 64bit version, but some drivers still fuck up (I lost a printer when moving to 7, it was a little old and had no 64bit driver, I tried a lot of things and searched for days but the printer was useless)
If they do that it's a +1 for buying it already. Expecting they won't fork the usability with metro, it should be nice after we get used to it. c'mon.
Anyways, I think people is making too much assumptions based on some seconds of videos and out-of-context screens, regardless the visuals, which we always have adapted to, the important thing is if they will keep (and hopefully further improve) the robust interface and fix usabilitty and compatibility issues.
It's important to note tough, most OSs from MS come not too good, and mature over its first/second year with the updates.
You're right I am being extremely paranoid.
I get all these constants "What if's" in my head just thinking about a possible OS upgrade right now.
What if this certain program stops functioning, what if this certain emulator doesn't work anymore and what if I can't find a good replacement for this certain emulator or program that have worked before.
My biggest fear probably is Project64, one of the greatest N64 emulators made for Windows.
It's also one of the oldest of all Emulators I have and have been with me since Windows 98, XP, Vista.
Ok so it have worked great in every OS upgrade but "What if" it don't on 8, again I'm being paranoid.
I suppose it has to be a trial and error thing like the last times *sigh*

If the actual Project64 wasn't compatible with Wind'oh8 (

) I guess devs of this great emulator would provide a new version. Good occasion to update it and why not to get some games playable for example some StarWars games I mentioned these games randomly of course

Well it's not that easy.
The latest stable release of Project64 is 1.6 with recent plugin updates from Jabo to 1.6.1.
I think Jabo have left the scene on this one hence why he released the plugin updates.
The 1.7 beta have been a beta since many years back now and I don't really know what is gonna happen to the project.
Project64 1.6 with the latest plugins works great on Windows 7 but if there ain't gonna be any more releases I don't know for how long 1.6 can work on future OS's.
I've never used anything else besides Project64, started with 1.4 way way back.
I'm just worrying myself I guess.

I don't use 1.7 I've never seen a real difference with 1.6 and other emulators like 1964/Mupen are not better (personal opinion of course). I suppose N64 emulation has reached such a good level that devs are no more interested in it. A shame because some great games don't work but fortunately a lot of other pearls do

Yeah and the same goes for PlayStation/ePSXe with latest release 1.7.0 from may 2008.
A lot of emulators have stagnated in recent years and indeed they work superbly for the most part.
All the games I use for the emulation today works great and I enjoy every moment of them.
But there is a constant thought in the back of my head, "What if"
I have seen many projects become dead and abandoned in recent years.
It's sad to see.
Well I only hope an future OS upgrade doesn't break anything, it's a real shame if all these good emus were to become useless, a real shame.
I guess all of this gaming and emulation stuff is my main reason for being paranoid of new OS's and especially Windows 8.
I just can't handle it if something were to be broken.
And I wouldn't even hesitate in upgrading if it wasn't for all this.

Fortunately we are not compelled to upgrade

. There is something you may have not thought to : what if emulation became better with this OS? We don't know after all

That's true, emulators like Dolphin, PCSX2, DeSmuME, SSF etc. that's being worked on a regular basis might benefit and become better with a new OS.
I'm actually curious about Dolphin and PCSX2 in 8
But old emulators that's practically dead, I don't know if they would benefit anything from a new OS.
Could be that they're no longer compatible and just broken.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see. I'm just being paranoid.

I understand your concern Maverick but I think you have nothing to worry about.
I think the best way to actually try the new OS is by using the free trial provided by Microsoft of the server version of the OS.
I was uncertain of some apps that I've used prior Windows 7 and they all worked fine under Server 2008 R2 which basically shares the same kernel as 7.
Then I bought 7 and enjoyed it since.
8 will not be so much different from 7, 7 is 6.1 and 8 will be 6.2
It's not gonna be a major release from Microsofts part but a minor one.
I actually think from what I have seen they've just have improved 7 for more "touching" like the metro UI.
You can always disable it I think.
Windows 8 will work great and I look forward to use it with the new Ivy bridge CPU next year.
Well i'll give them 365 days to sort out any bug reports before getting mine or i'll use a VM to run it

Well I'll be... if it ain't Gabe who have returned.
If you're put it that way, then maybe things will work out just fine.
