I'm building a computer for the first time, and I want the truth about AMD. A lot of people say they are slower than Intel, but are they just fanboys, or is this the actual truth? If its not, then I'd like to get an AMD because they're a lot cheaper. Looking on Newegg, it seems like AMD processors have gotten good reviews.
look at benchmarks for each CPU, decide for yourself
dont open threads about something google can easily explain

(go figure, my 100th post is a 'look at google' response)
Ok,lets say u get some i7,why?
You can buy 3 Wii's for that money.

Phenom II 955 Quad Core is the way to go ;P OC to some 3.6 or 3.8 and ur ready to blast Dolpih.

For the same price as a phenom II 955 you could get an i3 540 that would MASSIVELY outperform it in dolphin and allow you to use copy efb to ram + lle recompiler audio without slowdowns in most games. Simply put at the moment amd does not have a desktop cpu that can compete with intels offerings as far as dolphin is concerned (of course you get what you pay for, and amd offers some very nice low budget cpus).

But I agree with silveruniverse. Set a budget for yourself than do research on the different cpus availible in that price range and see how they stack up.

I currently own a Phenom 955BE and it works great, and no like some user said before, a i3 is NOT as fast as a Phenom when you take into consideration it's a better multi-tasker, this means it can do more than the i3 can faster while still making your computer usable.
What I mean is if a application uses 3 or 4 of the cores a Phenom II 955be has, you'll get your work done faster especially if Dolphin isn't the only thing you worry about, think rendering video or games.

Plus, a i3 is about the same speed as a C2D which is a dual-core, while the phenom is a quad.
No matter what, any CPU you buy for over $150 you'll probably be happy with, AMD gives you more cores for less, while Intel gives you less cores with fake threads.

If you have the money, I would go for a i5 2500k or i7 2600k they're incredibly cheap for very high-end CPU's.
If you don't, a Phenom 955 is clocked at a decent speed or a i5 @ 3+Ghz.
I have always done Intel builds in the past, but for the latest build I did in January I chose AMD and did a AMD/ATI/ASUS combo, and to tell you the truth I'll never look back again.

You want the truth about AMD, it rocks!
point is, you buy a powerful CPU that fits your budget and the program you use

Dolphin uses 2 CORES. THIS TOPIC IS ABOUT DOLPHIN AND THE CPU THAT WOULD SUIT IT.

Here's the specs from CPUBenchmark.net for the 2 CPUs discussed
http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

CPU Name__________________CPU Mark(higher is better)__Rank(lower is better)_____CPU Value(higher is better)____Price(USD)
Intel Core i3 540 @ 3.07GHz____2807___________________201__________________24.41_____________________$114.99*
AMD Phenom II X4 955________3940___________________113__________________28.14______________________$139.99*

Dolphin can use 3 cores Tongue

I like Intel better but If you are dirt poor, like me Sad , go with AMD

But it's rarely useful.

If he only wants to run Dolphin and application that don't really make use of more than 2 cores (most video games), he should buy a Sandy Bridge i3.
Dolphin NEEDS the high memory throughput that you can only get on i3/i5/i7 cpus when you're using copy efb to ram. And lets not forget dolphin does a lot of vector math which intels cpus exceed at.
